Hindu nationalists don't trust anything that isn't Indian. They want a Hindu India run by a Hindu government. They have attacked Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, and other religious groups. Is it a religion thing? Yes, but it's more about power.
These feelings and actions aren't without reason. Sometimes they attack because they've been attacked, like when Muslims bombed an amusement park in Hyderabad this last August. The distrust for foreign things comes in large part from a globalized economy coming into India. This has forced Indians to change millennia-old traditions so that they would be more acceptable to the rest of the world. They can no longer use the caste system, widows can bring only dishonor to their families because they're not allowed to throw themselves onto the funeral pyres of their husbands, teens are dating, and family businesses are going bankrupt due to large corporations taking their customers and future employees.

I know, and it was pretty disappointing to read it actually. I am a Hindu myself and I am wondering if the money for conversion to Christianity thingi drove some extremist Hindus up the wall.
It is a pretty common thing in India unfortunately, whether some like to hear this or not. The poor are converted in exchange for money or goods. Nobody would dare try this in the middle east, but India is democratic.
I hope action was taken immediately to stop further damage.
I am not justifying the actions, I am as disappointed as you are. I am proud be what I am - a Hindu, and I've been brought up way too well to disrespect other religions.

1) Some Hindu fanatics want to create a pure Hindu state - unfortunately they are in many state governmenets and were part of the Indian govt supported by the Bush regime. They have been responsible for numerous attacks on non-Hindus most notably the genocide of Muslims in Gujurat in 2002
2) They hate the fact that lower caste Hindus who they treat as sub-humans are leaving their slavery by converting to other religions .
3) They feel Hinduism is under threat from this and from westernisation of India
4) Christian missionaries are often extremely rude and insulting to Hindus calling their Gods demons and devils

There is a lot of christian/hindu fighting in india. There are churches in America that send money to support christian terrorists that murder Hindu priests.
It just keeps going back and forth.

Why did the British replace African slavery with forced Indian labor, destroy their infrastructure, introduce their brand of christianity, and exploit ethnic tensions for over 200 years?

Why did Christians kill anything that moved but didn't think exactly like they did for over 1,000 years? The world may never know.
