It already has succeeded..more sales in it's first year then 360 (2005 to 2006) had it's first year...Blueray movies outselling hddvd 4 to 1 in some demographics and 3 to 1 in most other demographics. Many game developers third party producing exclusives for ps3 because of the 50 gig capacity blueray discs and the Highest performing CPU and GPU of all the consoles.... ANd Alien ware is only offering Blueray as an HD disc option on it's high end gaming computers which means many PC developers will be developing games for the size of Blueray.
So i'd say the ps3 has done very well. So well that Microsoft is considering allowing the toshiba's hddvd computer entertainment center to have 360 game play capability. announcement supposedly in Jan 08 release nov 2008.

unlike xbox360 ps3 has been displaying games with lesser graphics than it can do. its very difficult to do the art the only ps3 or a pc can pull off. ps3 will live(try world in conflict for pc. xbox 360 and call of duty 4 look cartoonish by comparison.)
