I filed my taxes early last year, then the next day after I filed, I got another form in the mail for unemployment. So I amended my taxes and had to mail the forms in. I didn't do it, so I am wondering if I can still get the money when I file for this year? Would I need to send that paperwork in? It wouldn't be anything for State, but about $300 back for federal.

I was just looking at my turbo tax online and it's only an extra $52 bucks that I would be getting, I filed online, but it said I needed to mail it in.

You have to file an amended return for the year in which you received the income and for the year the 1099 is for. You cannot include the income and additional withholding on this year's taxes if it was reported for 2006. If you are, in fact, receiving an additional refund, you should also receive a small amount of interest. If you file an amended return with the IRS, your state will no doubt require you file an amended return with them as well. The important thing though, is that each year is handled separately, do not add last year's income to this years return. You will just get deeper into a mess and have to correct this year's return as well. Good luck.

For a refund, an amended return for 2006 is due by 4/15/2010 so you have plenty of time.

However are you sure you are getting a refund?

Unemployment gets added to the rest of your income. Unemployment generally only withholds 10% and if your total income for 2006 was more than $12-13,000 you would actually owe. And if you were getting EIC, you may have to pay some of that back.

Additional info--1040X forms are ALWAYS mailed in. They have never been set up for efiling. Also, when you look at the 1040X, it does show your previous refund on line 19, right?

You can still get your refund of $52. Mail in the federal amendment and in a couple of months you will get your money sent to you.

You must do an amended state return as well even if there is no change in the tax.

Each year is separate, so you can't just file the extra form with this year's.

The 1040X form, for amended returns, can't be efiled, you have to mail it in. And unless you do, you won't get your money.

You will have to file an amended return for last year. You cannot file it with this year's return.
