I found an abandoned kitten at around 2 days old. He just went in at 9 weeks of age for his first series of shots and vet reported he was doing great. Christmas Eve day he started breathing hard and heavy and had raspy sound when I put my ear to his body. He had no energy, did not eat but urinated. We were out of town, couldn't find an open vet. Next day he was eating, drinking water, defecating (solid, not runny). Breathing still seems heavy and not as much energy as before but doing much better. We have an appt. with vet tomorrow but before I go I need to know what to expect before I go in. Any ideas?
Thanks.

Also, he does not have runny nose and is not sneezing or really any other indicators of a cold. Just the breathing sounds off and seems difficult for him. He gets winded easily, so we have him separated from other cats in house so he can rest.

Sounds like you have done the best thing for him for now. It may be a respiratory infection. if that is the case you'll get some pills or liquid that you will have to give him. If he is old enough for the pills I always take that option. The liquid meds a messy and most of it gets on you and the cat rather then in the cat. For now keep doing what you are. Monitor him and keep him away from the others so that he can rest and doesn't pass the infection on.

So far, you have done everything right. Calling the vet and keeping him peacefully away from his playmates was the best thing you could have done for him. Just make sure he stays very warm over the next few days and remember that kittens get colds just as people do. The vet might prescribe him some meds just to be safe, but it doesn't sound too serious if he is eating and digesting properly.

Best of luck!

Keeping him separate from the other cats is a good idea, in case whatever he has is contagious.

The vet will ask you about the symptoms, and he might want to do a fecal test. He's already had his first shots, so your vet should have his records on hand. That will simplify matters greatly.

Good luck!

Young kittens often can get respiratory infections and in little ones, it can be quite serious and even fatal. I'd see if I could move up the vet appointment. You are right to separate him for the other cats - it can be quite contagious.

Keep him in a warm space (blanket in box with heating pad on low under blanket or box. Give plenty of water and whatever food he will eat.

And good going on getting him to a vet... that should do it.

Probably something similar to kennel cough. His lungs may be under stress due to lack of nutrition and exposure to the elements.

Sounds like a reaction ti the shots, which is typical. Didn't the vet say he may be lethargic for a few days after his shots?

could be kennel cough. it's not a cold but it can have symptoms like one. usually just a cough and low energy. that's my guess anyway. good luck at the vet!
