Catholic is what the Episcopalians used to be . When Henry the Eight wanted to divorce his wife , the Pope refused , so he dropped the Catholic religion , and started his own church , which he called The Church of England . In America that church is called the Episcopalian church .
The big difference is that the Episcopalians do not recognize the Pope as the head of the church .

Besides the distinction given above - Catholics see the pope as their spiritual leader, while Episcopals see the Archbishop of Canterbury as the "first among equals" - there are other major recent distinctions.
Episcopal clergy may be male or female, and they may marry. Catholic priests are male only and take a vow of celebacy.
The Episcopal Church does not excommunicate members who divorce. The Catholic Church does.
The Episcopal Church approves of artificial contraception. The Catholic Church approves only of the ineffectual rhythm method.
The Episcopal Church in America and Canada has blessed same-sex marriage. The Catholic Church has not.
The Episcopal Church condones abortion when the health or life of the mother is at risk, and in cases of rape and incest. The Catholic Church does not.
There are other theological distinctions as well, but these are hardly noticeable by the laypeople.
