The truth about reincarnation is that it makes no sense. Who you are is basically the product of your brain, so the idea that you could still be you but in the body of an ant is absurd.
And my understanding is that reaching enlightenment is meant to break the cycle of rebirth, which would mean Buddha wouldn't come back as anything. I could be wrong.

As a Buddhist i am not so concerned with reincarnation, but my understanding of life in death is in what I see everyday. Plants grow, die and decompose, new plants rise up feeding on the nourishment form the last. This is my understanding of reincarnation, no self being transported body to body, just BuddhaDharma

Actually, it's all about consciousness evolution. Consciousness evolves from the matter/atomic level, through simple life forms, to animals and then humans. Consciousness moves from unaware, to group/pack awareness, to individual awareness (humans), to total unity awareness (enlightenment).
Reincarnation supports an upward progression to unity consciousness - towards God. Reincarnating as an animal would be a backwards step in consciousness evolution for one who is aware of their individual identity, which doesn't happen.
Also, good and bad are value judgments created by the human mind. In this physical illusion we see duality - in the Creator there is only unity - all is One. Therefore even what you call "bad" is a manifestation of the Creator.
There is only Love. In the Creator Love is fully unified. In our dimension of existence the Creator's unified Love is split into love of others and love of self. We generally define love of others as "good" because it is demonstrated through generosity, compassion and caring. We generally define love of self as "bad" because it is demonstrated through greed, control of others and caring only about the self. Eventually however, all love is re-united in the Creator.

My tradition believes that your incarnation this time around has no bearing on your next life. Your karma will deal with you in this life since this is when you did your deeds (bad or good).
We also believe that since we are human, we reincarnate as humans. We will keep doing this until ALL life lessons are learned, making you fully enlightened.
