The Kia, being a new car, will lose so much of its value as soon as you sign the papers. The Toyota has already done that. Value-wise, get the Toyota.
Good luck!

Your parents are thinking brand new with a warranty & that's a good thought. Toyota has a much better car. No one I know loves their Kia & they have regrets, so I can't tell you to buy one. The Matrix isn't a good deal especially if it is a 4cylinder because it will bog down & not go anywhere soon. It has too many miles.
1) If you buy a new car you get better/lower interest rates on the loan than with a used car & the loan can be longer in term > which means you can have a great new car for the same amount of money a month as a not so great used car.
2) Toyota has several new cars which are in great price ranges for you so you need to compromise & get a car you can afford & get the warranty protections on instead of your dream car for now. In a couple years after you have made the payments on time & proven to everyone that you are credit worthy you can trade in the car you settled for & get a car you dream about.
We are going through the same thing here. Basically we want the best for you & we want you to have it all. In the car loan world it's not always possible to give. Hope this helps.

Toyotas are not infallible. They are good cars. Pretty much all cars are these days. Including Kias. Toyotas break down just like every other car. I've seen it happen. What's really important is the condition of the Matrix. If it's been really, really well taken care of then maybe it would last as long as the new Kia. After that it's going to come down to personal preference. Whether you like the options, design, etc. Kias have come a long way. Remember that the Kia's got that 100,000 mile warranty. That is a very serious factor.

I owned a 1999 Kia Sephia for eight years and just bought a 2007 Toyota Matrix a year ago, so I'm pretty qualified to answer. :)
The Kia was a lot less expensive, but you get what you pay for. Very no-frills and needed more maintenance than the Toyota. But it always started in the morning, and never had TOO many big problems. I sold it to a local in town, so I still see her on the road on occasion. My Sephia was roomy enough for me, but I'm only 5'0". Anyone taller (my 6'2" boyfriend, for example) had a horrible time trying to fit in the back seat. Or the front seat for that matter. So, small, simple but reliable. As long as you buy it from a respectable dealer and use them to keep up the regularly scheduled maintenance, you shouldn't have any problems. Also, use GOOD gas stations. I tried the cheap stuff for awhile and it really killed my engine. The service station said Exxon, Mobil - any of the big names - but the Kia engines don't take well to the unknown gasolines.
As far as my Matrix, I absolutely adore it and think it is the best car I've seen in a long time. 60k miles is nothing to a Toyota (my parents own two that have over 300k on each) and they literally can be driven into the ground. The Matrix has plenty of room, both in seating-area and trunk space. I had the XR version, so it can equipped with everything. No big repairs so far (knock on wood), but I know from family experience with Toyotas that all you need to do is keep up the recommended 5k miles maintanence and you're fine. Same deal though - buy from a good dealer, as that's who you should trust to do the work. We've been using our dealership for 25+ years and get great rates, service and cars.
My recommendation? Get the Toyota. It may be more expensive (and used) but you'll get a lot more of your moneys worth than you will with a Kia. It will probably last longer, and it's a bit more reliable than a Kia. I loved both of my cars, but the Matrix won me over pretty quickly. :) Good luck with your new car, whichever you get!

It varies widely, and it's a scam-ridden area so get informed. Most likely you'l get a basic warranty included w/ the car since it's that new. You absolutely you need it, and you need the bumper-to-bumper type, not the power-train or drive-train that has many exclusions. And a Factory warranty, that is from the manufacturer like Toyota or Kia, not a third party company you never heard of and may be in bankruptcy. Go to the Dealer's finance manager and get copies of what types of btb's are avail. Read them carefully before buying for coverage, exclusions, limits, terms, definitions, etc. Longer term and fewer exclusions will cost more. Shop around, bc dealers are likely to have dif prices. A few yrs ago I dealt w/ Toyota's finance managers on warranties and some were not informed. I called Totyota's Head Quarters and they had dif answers from some dealers. But the bottom line is the wording in the warranty contract. You mite wana consider Honda or an other manu. in view of Toyota's big recall.

It is true that a Toyota would last a long time, once something breaks it will cost hundreds of dollars to fix. Kai's have a great Warranty so if they do break it will be fixed, and Kai's have come along way, they are more dependable then they once were and that's why they afford to have such a huge warranty. I don't own a KIA but I know many people who do and they love them. Ask many of the people here if they ever have driven one and I am sure they will say no, Anyone who has driven a newer one would never say not to get one. What they lack in power they make up for in fuel economy.

Its funny listening to people just tear apart Kia. Especially when people say Chevy and Ford are American brands but Kia employs more Americans than those two "American" companies combined. Chevys are made in mainly in Mexico. Do your research and drive a Kia. Everyone seems to forget Toyota and Honda came to America with not such a good reputation as well.

i really think you should buy the Toyota because Kias will die on you in a couple of years. Toyota has a reputation of making cars that last long. Kia makes cheap cars that will break on you in a few years. oh and the matrix looks hot :D
Hope this helped :)
