No, there is no such update. Sony had removed all of the necessary hardware from 40GB version. Unfortunately, you won't be able to run PS2 games on 40GB. However, you can run games from PS1.

Their plan for the 40 Gig is to create software drivers for the PS2 games- like Xbox360 does with old Xbox games. I'm not sure if any are available yet, but they will be released on a game-by-game basis. I'd connect to the PS Network and try to play the discs. It should notify you if there is a software driver for it. There is also a PS2 download on the network that might help...

As of now NO! Who know if there is a way for them to do this through just Software! But I think there is actually a part (graphics) that was taken off that would allow this to work. Maybe with Sony's help they develop some flash drive that you plug in that lets it play backwards compatible games, but as of now there is nothing!
