That is inappropriate there. It would not be inappropriate in places like America, France, Italy, etc. But in many other places, you did a slightly inappropriate thing.

However, your impropriety erred on the side of affection. So, don't be freaked out about it. Just bow slightly next time. Your actions weren't unforgiveable.

I think even some Western girls might have thought it a bit strange. Generally you don't hug on the first occasion, once you get to know them better it'll be OK. Some Oriental people do hug (I always thought they just bowed until I went there and was occasionally given a hug), it just depends how well you know them.

I think that was a bit over the line. Japanese try to respect each ohter's personal space more than Americans do. A hug was too much for people you just met.

Eh, inappropriate maybe...but it wasn't like you shot somebody, so I wouldn't get bent out of shape over it. Like the others have said, just give a slight bow next time. They probably will understand that you didn't know and I'm sure they will get over it.

yes, it is inappropriate anywhere. if you are not aware of others feelings and you are pushing yourself onto them physically, you need to give them some personal space.

Yes they really are not into that, it would be more proper to bow.
