I have windows vista on my computer but when I put the DVD in, the computer still says that the drive is empty. Do I need any updates for my computer or my DVD player or do I need to do something different?

You need to have an HD DVD drive.
When you order a new PC, HP now provides the option to add an HD DVD/BD drive or you can buy it separately.

This is because you don't have a Blue-ray DVD player. Just like a VCD player cannot play DVD formatted disks, a DVD player cannot play a HD DVD or BR DVD formatted disks. I recommend you to purchase HD DVD compatible players if you are buying HD DVDs frequently. Of course, a HD DVD player is backward compatible. If you want to buy one, check this out:

what is wrong is that you bought an HD DVD and not a
Blu-Ray player.
