Worship Leader?
That would be Jesus.
He is our Leader who leads us into worship of the living God, reconciling us to Him, that we may be in His glorious presence, which - by grace - can lead to nothing but true worship.
Reducing "worship" to merely singing, with a "leader" that arranges which songs are to be sung and who and how they are going to be sung is a gross watering down of what true, Biblical, worship is.
And the churches that do this the most are the very ones that usually end up singing "modern worship" songs that are often unbiblical...and full of self, rather than focusing on the glory of God. And the glory of God is what brings forth true worship.
...we, as Christians, need to be ever on guard of making "worship" nothing but a "show"...rather than the Holy Spirit wroking within us to worship Him in truth.
For the true worshippers of God worship in Spirit and in truth.

A Worship Leader's role can be very diverse or as single-focused as being the person responsible for leading the singing/worship time during weekly services. The diversity of the role can be everything from teaching others to play music, teach others to sing, lead a choir, lead Christmas productions, put together video segments for church services, help with drama skits, etc. Look on www.churchstaffing.com under worship leaders and you'll get an idea from many of the job descriptions.
Becoming a worship leader takes a certain set of skills, most commonly both singing and playing an instrument. If you don't have these you're going to have a tough time finding the opportunity to be a worship leader. Can you sing? Sing on key? Read music? If you have these skills keep refining them by practice, practice, and practice. Also, keep up to date with worship trends and music. www.worshiptogether.com, www.worshipmusic.com. Many churches usually identify with certain worship artists: Matt Redman, Tim Hughes, David Crowder, Chris Tomlin, etc.
Other things to consider are types of churches: post-modern, emergent, traditional, contemporary, and seeker-sensitive. All mean different things and all have different worship styles.
The easiest way to get started is to talk with the pastor at your local church or with the worship team. Share your passion for worship and that you'd like to get involved. Gain as much experience as you can.
As you develop your skills/talent for music/worship and you exude passion for worshipping God, others will take notice and doors of opportunity will open up for you.

A worship leader is one who takes on the responsibility of leading people into worship during a church service.
Normally, this would be the lead singer of the worship team.
I did this once........sort of........but I didn't sing.
I merely picked out the songs and played them on the piano for 3 years. It's a big responsibility........because to whom much is given......much is required

It's usually someone that leads in singing praise(s) before and after a Bible study, etc.. The person is usually talented with an instrument. This is common in Christian churches.
The singing/praying/praising part of a bible study is considered to be the "Worship" portion of the meeting.

You get there by being called by God, and having your pastor offer you the position. The church doesn't work like a job, you don't apply for a position. You make yourself a "son (daughter)" of the church, serving the pastor, and if it is God's will, they will see your servant leadership and ask you to take a position of greater responsibility. Talk with your pastor if you think you are called to this position and they can help you see the path to get there if they agree that this is for you.
