Well, it depends...
If you want to raise a boy who is going to get his butt kicked regularly and is always and forever looking for other people to fix his problems, tell him to run away and tattle.
Otherwise, teach him to stand up for himself. And do the same for your daughters, too, please.

Encourage him to take a stand, but encourage him to choose his battles wisely. It took me a little too long to learn this lesson, but I wish it had been drilled into my head at an early age:
"Don't get involved if you don't have a dog in the fight, excepting that you shouild try to stand up for the defenseless or the ones at a disadvantage.
Words are merely that-words. Bruised egos aren't worth bruised limbs or bloody noses. No amount of talk should lead to blows.
Be humble to a fault whenever possible.
If pushing starts, apply the three strike rule... 'Push me once, it's a warning. Push me twice, I'll take a defensive stance. Push me the third time, it becomes physical. Throw a punch and the courtesy of two more strikes is removed.'
When it's worth fighting for, it's worth winning. Do not back off until the other party surrenders or submits. Continue the defense (up but not beyond the point of going on the offensive) to a point short of actual physical harm. Cause no permanent injury.
If it's worth using physical force to defend, do not let anyone, regardless of age, occupation, or gender, convince you that you're wrong."

You should encourage you son to stand up for himself. Ir you encourage him to tattle then he will go up to the teacher and say "He stole my block waaaaahhhhh" which wouldn't be a very good idea. But, tell your son that if he ever gets bullied in any way to tell you or his mother.:) Happy New Year!:)

Fighting is usually considered wrong in most situations. He will get in trouble at school for standing up for himself. It is a tough question because you don't want him to grown up to be a weenie, but fighting isn't the way to solve anything. There are skills to use besides running away or fighting. Conflict resolution skills are really important in today's world. You might try teaching him that there are ways to talk to someone that can diffuse a situation without the fighting.

run away and tattle-- its not tattling if someone's safty is at risk. Tattling is when someone is bending a rule and no one is looking - and someone decides to go be a snitch... if someone is trying to beat them up, definitely have your child get an adult involved... if a kid ends up hitting your child, even get the police involved so their parents will be closely involved and responsible for any injuries.

No way, when you encourage your son to run away, as if you already accepted that he is a loser, a useless person, an irresponsible one...and you give up on him...much as he is a loser..you are a loser too........but if you motivate him and encourage him to stand up, he will become a man and learn to face his challenges and become more independent and will try to be more careful of his actions..........in other words a more responsible young man!!!

Both in a way, let him know that it's good to stand up for himself in a lot of situations. But in some cases when someone could be in danger or something like that, let him know that its also okay to get help from someone.
Good Luck!

you should teach him self respect and make a decision based on what is happening. if a bully is going to beat him up then it makes sense to run away and report it (tattle is a baby word). teaching him to stand up and get a beating is ridiculous.
