No, Jews and Christians are not wasting thier time believing that God is reaching out to mankind.
Yes, I beleive that believing in God does change our lives. If we truly believe then our lives do not just change to a certain degree but we are transformed.
With love in Christ.

They aren't necessarily wasting their time. Their gods don't exist and they won't be rewarded with any afterlife, but that doesn't mean they don't get anything out of it.
And certainly in the case of Popes and prophets, believing in God changed their lives drastically. If they didn't believe in God, they'd probably have to get real jobs.

They may believe or they may not. We have no way of knowing. Pretending to believe sure gives the Popes, priests and officials of the church a cushy life. They can even play around with little boys if that turns them on.

Surely believing in a god changed their lives, but yes, unfortunately if they believed that their life would lead them to heaven, they wasted their time. If their belief led them to alter the course of humanity for the better, and that was their goal, no, they did not waste their time, it was only misguided.

The papacy has never been known for its true belief in "God" - it's always been about ultimate power over the deluded masses.

It may very well have changed their lives.
But it was nothing they couldn't have gotten from a dozen other, non-religious sources...
