Is one more important than the other, or do you believe that it is necessary to understand the origin of the universe and our planet in order to improve the world today?
In your opinion, is living ethically equally important to understanding why or how we are here, or is one of higher importance than the other?

Great Question.
I think the answer can be found in both.
By understanding he origins of the universe, we can better understand the future. This will help us improve the world today, because we can tackle problems from a true understanding of where we came from.
Personally, I believe that the origin of the universe was not 'inspired' by an intelligent being. That means that life on earth is EXTREMELY valuable, because its all we have. As a result I know that it is very important to make the most of life and to help as many people enjoy it as humanly possible.
Morally it wouldn't be right for me to live at the expense of others, so I must do my best to help all. If I believed in an afterlife, I would be compelled to achieve it, no matter what the cost. That leads to 9/11 like events.

Although one thing has a lot to do with the other, in my opinion, to improve the world today gathers more importance. The ideal though would be to divide the community in two parts. One would study about the origin of the Universe, and the other part would get busy in improving the world today.

Understanding the origin of the universe will improve our knowledge but improving the world today will make it fit for our later generations to think on better lines than us. So depends like will u like to live in your today or like to be remembered in shaping somebody's future

I think both are important. The more we understand about ourselfs, the better we are at making things better.
For the first time in 47 years, the number of children dying before age 5 dropped to below 10 million. Given the population rise, this is exciting news!

I am going to waffle here and suggest that perhaps understanding the origin of the universe would give us clues as to how to improve the world today.

Our search in understanding where we came from has led to a lot of technological advancements that improve our lifestyle, and as such I don't think it can necessarily be separated from the concept of "improving the world."
My point is that I don't think it's really possible to evaluate which is more important because there isn't a clear distinction between improving the world and understanding the world.

Both are parallel to each other. More understanding of our world leads to better quality of life. Sometimes breakthroughs in understanding isn't apparent on how it helps our quality of life until the data are used for studies or research that in turn results in more directly usable products by the common consumers.
Think of how non-sense the Theory of Relativity was when it first came out but now it gave way to more inventions and improvements in industries such as computers, communication, medicine, transportation etc. etc.

I think both are incredibly important. Somebody has to care about the future of our planet, and how are we to fully understand ways to ensure the planet's future if we know nothing of its past or how it came to be?
For me personally? It is more important to live ethically. I am not a scientist or a historian. This is all I feel I can do. :o)

My concern is making our planet a better place today.
I think everyone already has their mind made up about the origin of the universe. I do- I believe there is a God. So I think we need to protect the earth from damage man has caused.
