I want to buy my friend a rifle scope for his .22 but I want to get a better one than just the walmart brand. I see that Simmons is good, but what specs to buy? Not sure what the 4 x 32 and 3 x 9 x 40 means. It would be used mostly for target practice and very occasional hunting.

First the 4X32 would be a 4 power scope with a 32mm objective lens ( the end farthest away from the eye). A 3X9X40 would be a variable power scope, with the magnification going from 3 to 9 power with a 40mm obj. lens. The lower power will give you a bigger field of view ( how wide an area you see) and the higher power will bring the target closer but with a smaller field of view. For just plinking, the 4X32 will be fine. For longer shots the 3X9X40 would be better. Recoil is almost non-existent with a .22 so eye relief(how far your eye is from the scope) isn't a factor. Either scope will be fine for the situation you described. Hope this helped answer your question.

I have found a 4x scope to be ideal for a .22 rifle. I don't personally care for the simmons scopes, as their quality is only "fair" at best. A bushnell or even a Nikon is a better scope while still being reasonable in price. The scope measurements are as follows: the first number is the "magnification" and the last numbers are the size of the opening at the end of the scope. The larger the opening the more light it gathers and the larger the area you cn see thru it. for a .22 a 4x 32mm is ok. a 4x40 is perfect. a 4x45mm is a waste of money for a .22

I would stick with the 4x32 scope it is a very good scope for shooting with a 22 caliber rifle. If you are going to hunt with it this scope will give you all the optics you need. A simmons is a very good choice.

I have an old model Bushnell custom 22 scope.. it is a 3x9 with a drop compensator. Simmons probably has a similar scope available in a affordable price. I have found out you don't need very expensive scopes to enjoy 22 rifle shooting. But the ones with drop compensators make it easier to shoot at longer distances with ease.

the 4x 32 means that it has 4 times magnification and the objective is 32mm. 3x9x40 means that the magnification con be changed from 3 times magnification to 9 times magnification and the objective size is 40mm. The best bet for a scope would be the simmons 3x9x40. If you have any other queastions e-mail me at coyboy94@yahoo.com

i could recommend a fastened 4 ability scope on your 22 single shot Remington Rifle. you are able to mount a a million" scope incredibly with 22 Tip off form mounts, that permit you to mount any a million" diameter scope you go with. those Scopes would nicely be offered maximum everywhere and are even available at Walmart shops. The scopes will fee around $50,(Bushnell, Weaver are widespread Scope manufacturers) and the fee of the tip off mounts relies upon upon what type you purchase. they're low fee however. i could recommend you're taking your gun to a close-by Gun-shop or shops like Bass professional shops, Cabelas, or ***** wearing products. they are going to mount your scope for loose in case you purchase your scope at any of those shops......

4x32 means 4 power magnification, 32mm tube
3x9x40 means 3 to 9 variable power magnification, and 40mm tube. both are good, i use 4x32 and it is good for a .22, the other is mostly used for longer range than a .22 is good for. stay with the 4x32, a .22 does not need much more.

The best choice for the intended purpose is the 4X32.*
