It is a fruit that grows on a tropical tree. It starts in a bunch of blossoms that get pollinated. They then grow into a large dangling cluster of green bananas. When they mature each is their full size and still green. The entire group is cut off and then cleaned and wrapped for shipping. For retail use the group is cut into smaller units like the bunch (half dozen or so) that you usually see in market. In the market they start to turn their final color (yellow, red, or whatever).

The banana plant is ...not a tree, but a giant herb of the same family as lilies, orchids and palms. There are about 400 varieties of bananas. The rhizome is planted and gives a first shoot 3 or 4 weeks later. After 9 to 10 months the inflorescence from the foliated circlet has a diameter that can be as large as 7 meters. Three days after that, a bud hangs on the plant. On the fifth day, the bud turns red and starts opening. On the seventh day the leafs who covered it are falling down and finally two days later you can already see the first banana hands. The trunk of a banana plant is made of sheaths of overlapping leaves, tightly wrapped around each other like stalks in a celery bunch.

The word banana is derivated from the Arabic meaning 'finger'.

Each plant is allowed to produce 2 shoots at a time; a larger one for fruiting immediately and a smaller "sucker" or "follower" that will produce fruit in 6–8 months time.

This is for the seedless kind generally used for human consumption.

Since commercial bananas don't have seeds, cuttings are grafted onto stems from seed-type bananas.
