A game of chess where the players are people and the taking of a life is the taking of a piece and protecting your territory s keeping the other player off of your side of the board or minimizing the importance of the areas they take. Chess was designed by the Chinese as a war game and the sacrifice of pawn (military personnel) to potect the important (political and national) interest is part of the game. Tactics, strategy and protection or taking of assets (high value pieces on the board) are all the political side of war; just the pawns bleed and die instead of being taken off the board.

A game of tic-tac-toe. It's incredibly hard to win against an equally matched foe, the best you can hope for is a stalemate that you both can live with.
