Alpha testing is the absolute primary actual run testing of software, it's a very rough build. From what a developer learns in alpha testing they make changes to their product and generally conduct a more open beta test that is a far better product overall but still a far cry from the final build. From beta they make changes towards the final product. Alpha testing is generally extremely exclusive whereas beta testing is quite regularly open to the public provided that they sign up and such.

Define Beta Test

Hi,

Here is the wikpedia definition :-

*
o Alpha testing is simulated or actual operational testing by potential users/customers or an independent test team at the developers' site. Alpha testing is often employed for off-the-shelf software as a form of internal acceptance testing, before the software goes to beta testing.
o Beta testing comes after alpha testing. Versions of the software, known as beta versions, are released to a limited audience outside of the company. The software is released to groups of people so that further testing can ensure the product has few faults or bugs. Sometimes, beta versions are made available to the open public to increase the feedback field to a maximal number of future users.

It should be noted that although both Alpha and Beta are referred to as testing it is in fact use immersion. The rigors that are applied are often unsystematic and many of the basic tenets of testing process are not used. The Alpha and Beta period provides insight into environmental and utilization conditions that can impact the software.

Alpha testing is used when any type of new s/w or version of old s/w (known as alpha version) is released. For particular alpha versions the software is tested by the some specific group of users those are selected by the s/w developer, if that software is used by whole community. They are doing testing and checks that all the feature that are provided works properly or not(according to users aspect). When this group submitts their report the s/w comes into second phase of testing that is known as beta testing.
In beta testing all the bugs(it they are in alpha testing) are recoverd and finally that s/w is available to whole community. The version after beta testing is known as beta version.

Alpha testing – In house virtual user environment can be created for this type of testing. Testing is done at the end of development. Still minor design changes may be made as a result of such testing.
Beta testing – Testing typically done by end-users or others. Final testing before releasing application for commercial purpose.

Alpha Testing : Simulated or actual operational testing by potential users/customers or an independent test team at the developer's site, but outside the development organization.

Beta Testing : Operational testing by potential and/or existing users/customers at an external site not otherwise involved with the developers, to determine whether or not a component or system satisfies the user/customer needs and fits within the business processes.
