We are off to a New Years Eve dinner party at a hotel. It is 'formal wear', so hubby will wear a suit and tie (not black tie). Will I be ok in a pair of black trousers and a silky top? Don't really want to wear a dress.

The lady booking at the hotel has said it is NOT black tie (ie tux) but men should wear shirt and tie.

That would be perfect for a party here in Sydney, and quite OK as formal wear. There's no need to wear a dress these days, and a gown would be overdressed.

A lot would depend, however, on whether people are more formal where you live ~ we are said to be a little more relaxed here, although 'formal' seems to be the same everywhere.

And black is fine for evening wear, in fact it makes an outfit seem more formal anyway. With some good shoes and quality accessories, you'll look great and fit in perfectly well.

Have a great party and a happy new year!

Cheers :-)

If your husband is wearing a regular tie and not black, this is not a formal dinner. That's good, because no way would you then be able to wear trousers! I believe this would be designated a semiformal occasion.

If you want to ensure you won't be underdressed but still want to wear slacks, I suggest black heels and hose.

If it is formal that usually means black tie and you would have to wear a dress - a nice one.

If it is semi-formal than he can wear a suit and tie and you might be able to get away with the black pants and silk top, but I would opt for a nice simple black dress with nice jewerly you might be able to get away with it on the formal too.

I'd always wear a dress if my husband had to wear a suit and tie but I imagine that provided the trousers were "dressy" (!) you should be okay.

no i think you are totally set with a nice pair of pants and a dressy top. as long as the top is dressy and you have nice jewelery on no one can argue that you didn't dress up. oooh and get some cute shoes! i love dress pant outfits...i dont think that dressy are automatically dressier than pants. infact there are many dresses that are far less dressy than a pant outfit. not to mention pants can be sexier if they fit right. u could even have fun with a cute/nice jacket as well...dont have it match the pants though cause then it will look too much like business clothes. have a great night! happy new year!

Strictly speaking you shouldn't wear trousers. Nowadays the rules seem to be a bit laxer though. If it was me I would wear a dress. Go for trousers only if you can't stand the thought of wearing a dress x

I would say--not to be gross--resist the urge to blow full-force. Just slowly let it out, and dont squeeze too much, if at all. That way it will be slower and less loud. About the smell...I have no answers there, buddy. If it's possible to do this (some people would consider it rude; be careful and know first) excuse yourself and walk somewhere else, i.e. a bathroom or something to release it. =P Hope that helps!

Pants on a woman are NOT formal wear. While some may try to get away with it, it does not make it right. Formal wear means a Tux for the male and a DRESS (long) for a female.

What is the question, you have it all under control it seems. Calling the hotel was smart. This is NOT a formal event, it is semi-formal.
