HEALTHY food, in "moderate" portions,
Eat 3 meals, Breakfast, lighter lunch and main dinner
Skipping breakfast DOES NOT help

Excercise ( I know swear word to most young folks today)
If she's not excercised properly before, start off with a walk round the block every day (say a mile / 1.6km )
Gradually increase speed, and start jogging part of it.
MILD weight lifting, but talk to a fitness specialist for a proper program is she really wants to lose weight, as they are the best to help, as they can tailer a program to her strengths and weaknesses to help develop the body properly

This assumes she's at least 12yr old, if younger than that, then seek proper advice from a specialist BEFORE she starts anything more strenuous that brisk walks.

We don't have a lot of specific info about your niece so I'll just give the generic stuff.
Exercise regularly, like 2 -3 times a week. Aerobic exercise is best e.g. walking, jogging, bicyling. Remember to warm up and warm down.
Try to monitor all aspects of your diet. Cut out simple carbs like sugar, including soft drinks and potato chips. Eat lean beef with vegetables or other types of less processed food. Try to avoid "snacking" and stick to the main meals of the day. Have the occasional chocolate bar as a treat to reward yourself for good behaviour e.g. a week of no soft drink.
Hope this helps!

they tell us to exercise.Fact is not all of us can get to a gym.Movement in itself is exercise. It is true that the more you move the more calories you will lose.So move around as much as you can.Even when you are sitting on a computer or watching TV you are able to move. The more you move you loose. As well eat only when you are truely hungry. Most people are programed to eat a certain amout of times a day and eat even when they realy aren't hungry. And when we do eat we tend to endulge.Remember a lttle bit goes a long way and food is ment to keep us alive. It is not supose to be our lives.so eat when your body tells you that it is hungry but only until satisfied and not to the piont of uncomfortable fullness. This may mean eating several times a day but smaller amounts at.Also if you eat you bigger meals at the beginning of the day instead of a big meal at the end of the day you will have more energy and a chance to burn off the calories throughout the day.

how old is your niece??? why is this posted in the toddler and preschool section? If she really needs to lose a bit of weight then she needs to eat more fresh fruit and veg, drink loads of water and get outside in the sunshine. go for walks, ride a bike anything to get her heart rate up. no coke or pepsi, no lollies, chips, chocolate... obviously you need to eat these things but you have to limit them.

Tell her to exercise; she needs to do something aerobic at least 3 times a week and do light weight training a couple times a week in addition to that.

The best way is to go to a nutritionist, who will plan her daily meals. And go to the gym or participate in some sort of sport.

No sweets! That means no debbies, no cookies, no cokes, no chocolate, no candy. Just stick to regular food and fruits because you don't need sweets and they are just fattening.

Nothing is more important than what you eat. Food is for fuel, not for pleasure. If you don't eat right your body will never be right.
