I'm an agnostic, and find it somewhat offensive that I have to salute chaplin officers, whatever happened to seperation between church and state... and freedom of religion. Why is our government paying a church?

I know the salute is all about respecting the rank and not the person but the person really doesn't do anything but religion... they don't even fight.... Does anyone else agree... I know its nothing big to ***** about but com'on.

Using your logic, a member of the Christian Science Church shouldn't salute any doctor, nurse or dentist who is an officer.
Separation of church and state was a phrase used by Thomas Jefferson in a bit of private correspondence with a church member. It is not part of the Constitution, nor is it part of the First Amendment to that document. The Supreme Court who agnostics and atheists look upon as their bulwark on this issue starts each session with the bailiff of the Court asking "...God to preserve this Supreme Court...".
Perhaps Chaplain Corps officers don't fight. But, they surely die. Some have even been the posthumous recipients of the Medal of Honor. And they don't play favorites on the battlefield either. So, I hope you are never wounded. Because I don't want you to have to use your argument against that man kneeling by your side as the medics try to save your life. You will find he has more respect for your humanity than you have for his commission.

Get over yourself. You have no idea what you are talking about. You can have your own beliefs and that is good for you, but the Chaplain Corps is way braver than you will ever be hiding behind you hate for religion and faith. Chaplains in all branches of the military go to the front line and anywhere where there is action to give support without any weapons. That is braver than anyone with an M-16. They don't care about blood or bullets, they just go to help the men and woman fighting in those areas. Seems like you are a huge rookie in the military world and you need to check your facts before complaining about things you know nothing about. The whole military is not about you and your lack of beliefs and it has nothing to do with separation of church and state. The military is not part of either of those communities. Try making yourself a better person before you start kicking down the Chaplain Corps.

An officer is an officer. They still went through all the same basic courses (ROTC, OBC, whatever). A commision is just that.
The salute IS about respect, though not just for the rank. Chaplins are not allowed to fight or carry weapons- which only made me respect mine more in Iraq, Afghan respectively.
If it makes you feel any better, respect the Soldier (Sailor, Airman, Marine) instead of the rank.

Actually, Chaplains do other things besides religious related things.., they are involved in the community and they offer completely NON religious counseling services. They provide information and support to military personnel in many ways, and not all of them have to do with saying mass.

and besides, the military doesn;t pay the church, they pay the individual.

No, you have to have a divinity degree and recognized by your religion as ordained. So as a Catholic, you will have to be a Priest.
