oh oh, some many errors.
Cantonese is THE language in Hong Kong. Few people speak Mandarin, many English, but by far not all. Mandarin is sort of "foreign" language too, but we are getting better in it.
Mandarin has 4 tones, Cantonese 6. Language syntax is very similar. I suggest not to learn the tones, it's too abstract to be learned out of language context.
Just listen a lot, and listen more. The pimsleur course is a very good starting point. With hearing you learn tones without actually learning them.

Sorry, but Cantonese is crazily hard to learn. I'm learning Mandarin which is hard enough (there are tones on the words so 'ma' can be said in 5 different ways). Mandarin has 4 tones but Cantonese has up to 9 which makes it super hard. Almost all Cantonese speakers are born into Cantonese speaking families hence they are native speakers. There are very few speakers who aren't Chinese that have learned the language. I recommend a book with a CD from amazon because you can hear pronunciation with the words.

i'm an close by Hongkonger, so enable me make this real sparkling for you. We in Hong Kong talk Cantonese, it rather is a spoken chinese language, no longer a dialect. The expert spoken language in mainland China is Mandarin (Putonghua), which isn't what we talk hearer on a on a daily basis foundation, nonetheless a lot persons can under it and talk it to a definite volume. The chinese language is a no longer a single spoken language, yet has many varieties. Cantonese is actual a greater real version and closer to classical chinese language than Mandarin. in addition to, there is meant to be only 1 version of written chinese language characters, until eventually the Communist party in 1949 desperate to invent a bastardized version of chinese language charters called "Simplified chinese language". We in Hong Kong and Taiwan use the unique real version called "classic chinese language". with the purpose to summarize, we the persons of Hong Kong do no longer talk or examine the comparable style of chinese language using fact the mainlanders in China.

I can speak cantonese. However, I'm not from Canton or Guangzhou and nor are my parents. I grew up in America around the cantonese and learned it on my own. Just assoiciate with people that speak that language and you learn it naturally hopefully.

Ma'am,the cantonese is official language of HK/Macau,and people's mother tongue is that in Guangdong and somewhere in Guangxi of mainland China.
The cantonese pronounciation have been sorted by nine syllables. It way close ancient chinese than any phylum in chinese is.If you get that done, you're gonna get the mandarin easily.
You could come by following website as reference, that would do you a favor for more cantonese learning.
