Paraphrasing Stephen Pinker (a linguist), if an alien was to describe the human inhabitants of Earth, it might say that we all spoke the same language with varying regional vocabularies.
To think that outside of the realm of humans, in the bigger picture, God would care about such a trivial matter does not compute with me.
I mean, seriously. If God is cosmic..If he is the alpha and the omega..the beginning and the end..why would he care which vocabulary word we use? And why would this be more important than other human values?
I am not moved by Bible quotations, either. Dig deep and see what you come up with WITHOUT any biblical reference. I want logic.

Some fo the argumens posted here make no sense...the Bible proves nothing as far as what God or _______(insert name of choice) wants.
I guess the point of my question is that I don't think God cares at all about trivial human nature...including what we call him or her. The more important issue, it would seem to me, would be how we treat our fellow man, rather than dividing and casting judgemental admonishments against those using the god-given logic they were blessed with.
Bible quotes prove nothing.

Those who are saying imagine being called Bubba..Putrid, etc, are missing something here...this is YOUR feeling, not God's.
I guess the really meast of the question is "How do you know what god wants to be called?"
Like I said before, Bible quotes no good. Prove nothing. Could quote Little Women for all I care.
Quoting the Bible is the equivilant of saying "Because I said so!" with providing any actual reasoning. Which is not a reason at all.

I cannot understand how someone could presume to know so much about God..and downgrade him or her so much that he or she would actually care about what name we use!
God is not only YOUR diety. God belongs to all...Is it not demeaning to reduce God to a petty human idea of a father?

I guess God does not care how we call Him. What's important is that we believe in Him.

So if your name was Frank Hammer the carpenter and everyone went around calling you Joe Screwdriver the carpenter you wouldn't mind? Even if Joe Screwdriver was a complete mess-up? Even if you were the best carpenter on the planet and Joe Screwdriver couldn't find the right end of a saw?
Names bring forth images, character, attitudes.
Here is a name: Abraham Lincoln. Immediately, what images, what character, what person comes to mind?
God is a person. He is not some etheral mist floating around. He is a person and He has a name.
God has given us His name and His Son's name in the Bible. These names have meaning in themselves ( I AM and JESUS) but more than that - they provoke us toward the person behind that name.
God has given us His name. If we know it, we better honor it. If we know it and we don't honor it, we cast a shadow over the worthiness and the power of the person behind it.
"Thous shalt not take the NAME of the Lord in vain."
god bless

God does not ask all that much from you (and believers) and gives you everything in return.
He gave you life and He asks you to love all others.
He gives you breath and He asks you to support all others.
He gives you prosperity and He asks you to share it will all.
He gives you passion for life (people will give all they have for one more day!) and all He asks is for you to do good.
He gives you children and He asks that you do not profane His name.
One comment, how do expect to found a question in Theology and not bring the Bible into the answer? It's like asking for a proof of a calculus question but one cannot bring any math into the answer. Geez....... get a life.

A case against the JW's. I agree with you. I don't think He cares what we call Him, He cares if we believe in Him and honor Him in our hearts and lives.
So let me get this straight, you believe in "God" but not His word the bible, and we have no grounds for saying that something is or isn't true about Him by quoting His word? Alrighty then!

I have three boys and I care wholeheartedly what they call me. If I didn't, my relationship with them would not matter much.
If we think of God as a loving caring father, then what we think of Him matters much to Him. But if we think of Him as an indifferent spiritual blob who is superior to our affairs, then he wouldn't care much about anything we do and consequently it doesn't matter what we call Him.

Damn, why do you imagine "god" cares anything about what we think at all?
Unless, of course, you believe "god" is not capable of experiencing anything in the material world he and he alone created???

Because God identified himself. His name is important to him. This is to distinguish himself with other gods. Names tell us about characteristics of people. You don't just call your dad any names you want to call him, do you?
