I mean what does the vegetable oil do for the cake mix? does it make it puff up or something??????????????

It does keep the cake moist. If you want to go lower fat you can substitute the oil will unsweetened applesauce in a white or yellow cake mix or canned pumpkin in a chocolate cake mix. They both taste really good.

it will be dry, can sub for butter but it will be more crusty
