The 60GB because it has full backwards compatibility with PS1/PS2 games, has a 60GB hard drive, 4 USB ports, and flash card readers. (though it has been discontinued for months, and they are hard to find.)

The 40GB PS3 can NOT play PS2 games (though it can play PS1 games), has a 40GB hard drive, 2 USB ports, and no flash card readers.

The 80GB can play most PS1/PS2 games, has an 80GB hard drive, 4 USB ports, and flash card readers.

I own the 80 gig because the only thing available at my local store was a used 40 some used 60's or a new 80. I originally bought a 60 but got it home and found out it was actually a 40. It lacked a lot of features the other two do like no inputs for memory cards and i believe no bluetooth. I think it will still do wireless online but you would be better off spending a little more and getting a good one if you are going to spend such a large amount on a system. I returned the forty the next day and got an 80 because I didnt want to have another problem from a used system and because I wanted an owners manual (which I found out was like 6 pages long and completely useless). The 60 will do everything the 80 will but i think you will be disappointed with the 40

in all honestly, you really don't need a 60 or 80 gig unless you're planning on downloading a crapload of content off of the playstation network thing.

if you're into that, then you'll want one of those.

otherwise, if you have a playstation 2, then just get the 40 gig. no point in getting a 60 gig with full backwards compatibility and paying way more if you can still play your ps2 games on...a ps2. that's what i'm gonna do, anyway.

and about the whole usb ports thing...again, if you're anticipating needing all of that, go ahead. but if you're just in it for the games, and maybe a little bit of downloadable content, then go for the 40 gig.

The 60 gb is the better buy because it costs more to make, and it also has more functions. The 60 gb has the emotion engine, which is used to run PS2 games. It also has 4 USB ports instead of 2, and it has 3 flash drives while the 40 gb has no flash drives.

The 40 gb cannot play PS2 games.

This question is an often one, so that's my cut & paste answer:
1). 20GB has no chrome trim, no memory card reader and no wi-fi. Not manufactured anymore. Has the best backwards compatibility with PS2 games due to Emotion Engine (PS2's CPU) and Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU) installed.
2). NTSC 60GB has the same backwards compatibility as 20GB version, also has memory card reader and wi-fi. Has a chrome trim.
3). 80GB - extended memory, but reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games, it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played. Available only in NTSC regions.
4). 40GB - can't play PS2 games at all (all PS2 chips were removed), has 2 USBs instead of 4, no memory card reader, has wi-fi. Avalable in black and white colors. White is on sale only in Japan. Uses 65nm technology (lower power consumption). Improved cooling system. It's the latest version. 40GB doesn't support SACD (Super Audio Compact Disc).
5). PAL 60GB - reduced backwards compatibility with PS2 games. it has only Graphics Synthesizer (PS2's GPU). Around 80% of PS2 games can be played.
Wi-fi included in all models, except 20GB.

Go for the 60gb because it has everything that the 40GB doesn't have.
