I think it's inconsiderate, because I have worked in the food industry myself. Generally, you are supposed to tip at least 10-15% of the total bill for okay/minimum service. And, if you are really impressed with the service, you tip above 15%, which I normally do. And no, being a certain race doesn't make you a bad tipper, although I know some waiters who would beg to differ. It's just being considerate of the service you are given. I would be offended if I served your family a $50.00 meal, only to receive $1-3 in tips. A lot of people don't know this, but you have to take into consideration that the servers, at the end of the day, don't keep all their tips! They have to tip out the bartenders, runners, hostesses, etc. Please keep this in consideration next time you go out to eat. :)

In the Philippines, tipping is not expected and is typically not advised as this can cause conflicts with the differences in the actual amount of pay between the waiter/waitress and cooks. (waiters/waitresses can hide cash money for themselves) Sometimes it also encourages servers to provide poor service to customers that pay low or no tips.

But in states, it can range up to about 15%. So the amount of tip you give is dependent on the total amount, your evaluation of the service performed, and your financial condition. If your family appreciates the service performed but is on a very tight budget, then $1-3 should be fine. Consideration should be a role for both the customer and the server.

Many countries overseas don't have a tipping system, or at least a tip is not expected. But in the U.S. servers are paid a very small hourly wage (2or 3 dollars) and depend on tips from their customers. They should give good service to get a good tip, but it's customary to tip at least 15%. Give more if they give excellent service. If they give bad service, don't tip,but tell the manager why you decided not to tip. I know people from other countries may not agree with a tipping system, but that's the way it is in the U.S. It's hard for servers when they work really hard to make sure you treated well, and then after their shift they go home empty handed. When we were in Eruope, we were told that tips were not expected because they earned a fair hourly wage, but for good service we tipped well anyway as a "thank you," nobody refused or gave the tip back.

I fail to see how your ethnicity would have any bearing on this particular issue. Inadequate knowledge of proper tipping procedures (and indeed, social skills in general) is something that any race, creed, or color can suffer from.
In the U.S., it is customary to tip your server 15% of the total bill before tax. If the service is particularly good, add a few dollars. If the service is sub-standard, subtract a couple bucks. Tipping less than 15% for good service is just rude and inconsiderate.

Normally you should tip 10% -15% based on service and total amount of the bill. Better service deserves more up to 20%. If there is a service charge already added on the bill tipping is optional.

If you experience bad service, tipping is optional but note that servers DO remember the good and bad tippers. ^_^

Well, I mean, I've never understood why tipping is a must in the US. In my country, tipping is against the law. I guess I feel that if you wanna hire someone, the employer should be paying a decent salary so that the staff don't have to rely on tips. Isn't that the whole point of employment? To earn a steady income and not have it fluctuate all the time?

But I guess to answer your question, do what's done there. If the unwritten rule is 15%, it would be good to abide by that.

Never tip less than 15% of the total bill. Many people use their tips to financially make ends meet and would not be able to afford the cost of living without their tips.
Leaving a fair or even generous tip also keeps service at a higher rate of satisfaction to the customers. If everyone who made tips at work only received $1-3 then why would anyone want to provide excellent service. They wouldn't even try.

Well, I guess, but it's better than nothing. If your family is big and doesn't tip, then the servers are going to hate you big time. Most waiters and waitresses are idiots anyway, I don't like them. I've seen numerous articles advocating increasing percentages of tips. Some of them can't do math apparently. If I like you, you get a good tip, if I don't, then you don't!

Depends on how good or bad service was.

At least you are tipping, so the waitress/waiter should be happy they got that.

It isn't bad or inconsiderate. Tipping is a courtesy for good service. It is customary to tip 15% of the total bill. But if you can't afford it, anything is appreciated.
