A long time ago they were used to store items for a woman's wedding day, night and life as a married woman. I have one and have dishes, pillowcases that my grandmother made for me.
I don't think that they are used any more because most women don't go from their parents house to their 'husbands' house anymore.

I started a hope chest for each of my 3 children at the age of 13 (2 girls & 1 boy). Every gift giving occasion (birthday, christmas, easter, valentines day etc.) in addition to thier normal gifts I would give them something to put into thier hope chests. They are now 22, 19, & 17..The two oldest girls have since moved out and when they did, they had literally with the acception of food, had everything that they needed to set up thier first apartments. It saved them hundreds of dollars. While thier friends would sometimes make fun of them during the holidays when they would tell them that they got a set of towels for Christmas, or a microwave for thier birthday, those same friends are all now very jealous that my children are very comfortably set up in thier own apartments and not out a lot of cash to do it.

I have one. It's an "old-school" thing for sure. I guess not a lot of people passed the tradition down or some people just didn't want to take the time (I got mine from my Grandmother... it seemed to have skipped my mother's generation).

It is a great way for your family to collect things for your life to come. No not many do it anymore but it is not something that is completely forgotten. I would say have fun with it I did... I collected everything from blankets to dishes from baby clothes to toys. good luck!

My Grandpa has one that he plans on giving to me. It was my Grandma's. It's a big chest that smells like cedar. He keeps extra blankets in it, which is probably what I will do.

I just got one for Christmas from my fiance's parents. It is beautiful and was filled with lots of stuff for when we get a house. I don't think they are as common as they once were, but I am all about tradition!

My husband and I have one and store all of our personal mementos in it; things like cards we have kept, matchbooks from our favorite places, his baby blanket, my first barbie, etc.
It stores our things, like a scrapbook of our lives. Ever so often, we go through it and reminisce about our lives with one another.
