Secular music in and of itself is not evil. Some is. When you listen to secular music- make sure that it is not against biblical standards- however you do not have to listen to christian music all the time to be a christian. I am a musician that plays both secular and christian. However, what I do it must line up with scripture. Even Christian music is not always biblically sound either, so be careful.

There is some music that is clearly evil. You can hear it in the attitude of the style and the words, if there are any. I think anything you hear that makes you feel like the devil just sat down beside you must be evil. But not all who perform Christian music are followers of God. That is why I think you sense that some of it is fake. The words they sing are not the values of their hearts. This is also the case with some who make lots of money preaching. The god they serve ends up being greed instead of The Master. I haven't been able to find it in the scriptures that secular music is evil in God's sight. In the Psalms we are instructed to praise God with the dance, the drum, the guitar, the harp, the voice and basically any instrument. I know that fundamentalists do believe that secular music, especially rock and roll, is evil. They are entitled to their opinion. And rightfully so is anyone else who might be opposed by like sign, such as I. I won't waste my time trying to argue such a trivial point of doctrine with them or with any other. God is my personal Saviour and Lord, so when I want to know what to choose as my personal choice for any thing, I take it to Him personally.

Some people do believe music can be evil in and of itself. I am not one of those. I believe music is entirely functional (some moreso than others) and can only enhance or detract from a given message. If the message is evil but the music is gorgeous, it becomes more acceptable to a certain extent. If the music is poorly-crafted with awkward or otherwise unpleasant characteristics it will certainly detract from what might be a valuable, illuminated message. Of course, most music leans more toward the "listenable with an acceptable message" realm. The point is, the lyrical message is the thing.
Of course, in the absence of lyrics, music must rely on itself for telling the story. In this case, play whatever music illicits the kind of emotion you are attempting to achieve. The rest is up to you.

Secular music itself isn't evil per say, --I don't believe-- even in God's sight.
What music does is it affect your conciousness (your heart, your soul, subconciuos, ect). It implants thoughts and beliefs into your head if you listen to it enough, whether good thoughts or bad thoughts. They won't make you go out kill someone or anything like that, but it will affect your thinking in that regard.
Say for example you listen to a sad song a lot; out of the blue you will start to feel depressed or sad and you don't know why you are sad. This is probably because the music has affected your conciousness.
So if you listen to negative influenced music, then it will affect your thoughts as such, and vice versa if you listen to positive music it will improve you mentality.
Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life. (Proverbs 4:23)

Music itself isn't evil, but if its promoting promiscuity or killing or greed etc etc... then its an evil message. So-called "Christian" music is just like any other music, just with a different emphasis. It is what is in the message and in the musicians' hearts.

There is a difference between something being evil in God's sight, and something being evil in the opinion of pastor or other religious official.
I'm Christian, by the way.

Jehovah God loves music... One of his dearest worshipers King David, wrote may beautiful pieces of music praising Him. The Isrealites played happy music to celebrate their victory over the Egyptians when they were rescued from bondage at the Red Sea... that story too is recorded in the Bible. God created man with the ability to make and appreciate music. He gave many of his creations musical ways to communicate! Like a beautiful birdsong. It is only when imperfect man, under the influence of God's enemy Satan, MIS-USES this God-given gift that it becomes offensive to Him.

I assume you're referring not to the music itself, but to the lyrics. So, if your religion tells you that certain words or statements are "evil," then one would have to assume that the same words are "evil" when set to music.
