You can do a degree in photography, that will increase your chances, it is also a legit profession. Many people are freelance. The problem is that there are hundreds of thousands of people who want to be hired by the discovery chanel etc, so your chances are very slim. thousands of people have been working in professional photography for 20+ years, so It will be very competetive to get a job. Even an average photography job taking childrens photos is very hard to get nowadays. You should get whatever job you can take in photography, but don't be too disappointed if you don't get anywhere with your degree.

I have to agree with Draagon - if someone else's work is viewed by the client as being better than yours they will get the job, degree or not.
The best wildlife photographer I know never did a degree in photography, instead they studied animals and their behaviour.
If I was you I would try to find and contact the very best wildlife photographers I can, visit them, show them your work and ask them questions... a specialist will naturally know more than a college tutor when it comes to their own discipline, how to get into it / how to sell this type of images etc.

I know a 16 year old with this goal and I am willing to bet he'll achieve it. He has started by going to the zoo with a nice, long lens and taking portraits of the animals there. He has placed many of them in camera club competitions and won.
I hate it when people ask about careers in photography and other photographers respond so negatively. I wonder if this happens with doctors or other professions? Anyway, "Don't dream it, be it!" like Dr Frankenfurter sang.

All of these answers are great.
Check wildlife publications.
Several of these will periodically have photo contests

While all the above is true, the REAL answer is to get out there with the best equipment and DO IT. In so doing, PROVE to potential clients that you have what it takes. The proof of your ability is only as good as your photographic portfolio.
Degrees hanging on a wall will persuade no-one.
Quality shots - and something different - is what will get you where you want to be.

As above get your degree as a photographer. Do freelance to build your skills and portfolio. Obviously publications like National Geographic come to mind, but cracking them would be like cracking Fort Knox. But it's what you want to do , Right? Do what you want to do and you never work a day in your life. I forget who said that. Good luck to you.
