Could be an allergic reaction, but as suggested sounds like a bite or sting. Has he been outside by himself? I know a snake bite will do this. I'm not trying to scare you, just watch him very closely. If trouble breathing call every vet in phone book if you have to. Some emergency vet should be open.
If you have any Benadryl , you can give him a small dosage. If might help his discomfort.
Please let us know how he is.

Give him an antihistamine (like Benadryl); it won't hurt him and if it is a reaction to an insect bite, it might help. One would think this sort of thing doesn't happen in the winter but I've had two different dogs now that have had the same thing in the winter and I live near the Canadian border. Just be sure to tell the vet what you did. For the other possibilities, other then possibly some aspirin for pain relief (not good if a surgery is required and you do not know that yet), there's little you can do until taking him to the vet in the morning.

Any swelling around the face is serious. You need to put an ice pack or ice blocks in a towel to control the swelling and get him to a vet asap. Don't make an appointment, just ring ahead, tell them you are coming and I'm sure they will see you on the spot. . Camie xx

It sounds like an allergic reaction to something, you can give a dog Benadryl. The dose is 1 milligram per pound. Dogs take a much higher dose of Benadryl than we do. Keep trying to get ahold of a vet, especially if the Benadryl doesn't help.

he may have been stung or bit by something. carefully check out where he first started swelling to see if you can find a small red spot or punture. keep an eye on the swelling, if it starts to affect his breathing, find a vet immediately somehow.

Check around inside his mouth. Is it possible a piece of bone broke off in his mouth and is now stuck in there? My dog did this once - and since then I've never given him real bones.

If your dog is itching itself a lot it could be an allergic reaction.
