Assuming you have income, the tax return has 3 credits of interest to you.
First you calculate your tax liability. If it's more than zero and your child is under the age of 17, you may claim $1000 of child tax credit. This is used to reduce your tax liability, but not below zero.
Then in the payment section, you may be able to claim the rest of the $1000 (if your earned income was high enough) and possible earned income credit (if your earned income was low enough).
Of course, if you had no income, none of this applies to you.

The child tax credit is $1000 for each child if you owe that much tax. If you don't owe that much, you might get something for the additional child tax credit and for the Earned Income Credit, depending on your income and the number of children you have.
