First I'm surprised that they didn't ask you if you guys had plans. That alone is rude. I think there's nothing wrong with telling them you guys are going out because birthdays come once a year. They can come another day to celebrate your B-day. Sorry Happy Birthday!

I would tell them I've made prior plans and make arrangements for another day. I agree with you that staying at home and not asking them over is kind of rude, however, if that (staying at home) is what you want to do, then go ahead. It's your birthday! =)
Not sure how your family celebrates birthdays, but I think that if birthdays are huge celebrations for you, then they might take it harder than if birthdays were not huge events in your family.

Liberally let them know you will be going out for your birthday, or plan a little get-together earlier in the day!

Just tell them nicely that you've already made plans with friends to go out for your birthday this year. It's shouldn't be a big deal, after all, it's YOUR day. ......Happy Birthday!!

I would tell them, but with a little added finesse. I would say something like "Gosh, I would really love for you guys to come over but my friends have been planning this thing for me for a long time and I don't want to disappoint them! Can we please do it the next day, I would really love to see you guys!"
So it seems like you would rather be with them (making THEM happy) but you are "obligated" to go out (making YOU happy).
No hurt feeling and everyone gets their way!

Just let them know that you are going out for your birthday...and then plan something else for your b-day with them for another day.
