The only reason that Scientology has attracted bad attention in the media, is because there is people out there (many who are NOT scientologists), who try to spread old lies and falsehoods about the church to make Scientology look bad.
And despite the turbulent waters the church has ridden over the years, Scientology has continued to expand, becoming one of the fastest growing movements on earth.
In my estimation, the media will only comment bad things about religion and spirituality. When is there any good news about any church or any force of good in the press these days. Its always a priest that did this to a kid, or a mosque that burns down etc. that makes its way to the top headlines.
Scientology has proven itself to be a force of good. Its pratices may be different, but it does provide people with answers, and over the years, the church has been working with all faiths to get its technology as well as its message out into the masses.
My earnest advice is this.
If you want to learn about Dianetics and Scientology, and what it can do for you, you should just visit your local church of mission of Scientology or pick up one of L. Ron Hubbards books on the subject like
Dianetics: the modern science of mental health
Scientology, fundamentals of thought, or
The Problems of Work
and there are many others available in dozens of languages.
Close your ears to false statements made by haters out there, cause every religion has them. And see for yourself.

The controversies involving the Church and its critics, some of them ongoing, include:
Scientology's disconnection policy, in which members are encouraged to cut off all contact with friends or family members considered "antagonistic."[141][142]
The death of a Scientologist Lisa McPherson while in the care of the Church.
Criminal activities committed on behalf of the Church or directed by Church officials (Operation Snow White, Operation Freakout)
Fair Game policy that encouraged the abuse of critics.
Conflicting claims about L. Ron Hubbard's life, in particular accounts of Hubbard discussing his intent to start a religion for profit, and of his service in the military.[143]
Scientology's harassment and litigious actions against its critics.[143]
Attempts to legally force search engines such as Google and Yahoo to omit any webpages critical of Scientology from their search engines (and in Google's case, AdSense), or at least the first few search pages.[144]
Due to these allegations, a considerable amount of investigation has been aimed at the Church, by groups ranging from the media to governmental agencies.[4][145]
Although Scientologists are usually free to practice their beliefs, the organized church has often encountered opposition due to their strong-arm tactics directed against critics and members wishing to leave the organization. While a number of governments now view the Church as a religious organization entitled to protections and tax relief, others view it as a pseudoreligion or a cult.[146][147]
While acknowledging that a number of his colleagues accept Scientology as a religion, sociologist Stephen A. Kent[148][149] wrote: "Rather than struggling over whether or not to label Scientology as a religion, I find it far more helpful to view it as a multifaceted transnational corporation, only one element of which is religious." (Italics in original.)[150] [151]
Scientology social programs such as drug and criminal rehabilitation have likewise drawn both support and criticism

The first person to answer your question nailed it in one .....
TOM CRUISE....
now scientology is ONE HELL OF A WEIRD RELIGION .. but hey .. that's a person's choice if they want to believe in it .. and there are some pretty popular celebrities that do ..
We have a fantastic singer in australia called Kate Cerbrano .. she's been a scientologist all her life . .but she doesn't go ramming it down people's throats and condemning people for seeking medical help for post natal depression .. and she doesn't do a BAH-HUM-BUG-TOM-CRUISE-AT_CHRISTMAS .. she gets out and joins in the fund raising Christmas carol concerts
Now I think Scientology is REALLY weird .... BUT i really think the worst thing to happen to Scientology is the nutcase-fruit-loop tom' cruise's involvement .. the guy is a certifable FRUITCAKE.. arrogant self-righteous IGNORRANT GIT!!
If it wasn't for HIS stupid comments and behaviour . .most people wouldn't care less what scientolgists believe

Before he ever created scientology..l.ron hubbard told someone that the best way to make money is to start a religion.
And then he started a religion, which involves giving them lots
of money and e-meters that basically take your pulse and thetans from outer space.
And people believe it.
It almost makes jesus look like scientific fact.

Because Scientology is a scam. So many people have been scammed... and they're mad! The organization continues to suck in "marks" and bilk them for all their dollars. People who have been through that mill want to help enlighten others so they don't get sucked into it, too.

Because it's creepy and absurd. Scientology, like many other religions, are just massive scams to make gobs of money. They are good at it too, because people are weak minded.

My guess would be, because it's one of the few religions on earth that is verifiably bogus. It's a known fact that Hubbard invented it on a dare, and that it's based on a known work of fiction - yet people believe it anyway.
I imagine that's exactly how Christianity started.
