Depends on your location, how easy it would be to find. I do custom woodworking, and my partner used to sell lots of turning blocks. Check out ebay or craig's list, or put an add on craig's list or in your local paper. Check with lumber yards or mills for scraps. You might also check with custom woodworkers, as many times peices that are perfect for turning, are too small for other applications, and get left lying around the shop and get used for firewood, or are thrown away. If you live in a city, you might be able to find a specialty hardwood store, like MacBeathe's or a similar type of store. Some are open to the public, some you require a contractor's account just to purchase. I live in N. CA, and there is a store in Windsor called Mount Storm. They have lots of differnet woods and pre-made and custom moldings, lumber, and sheet goods. They are open to the public and you can go in and buy one stick of wood if you want. MacBeathe's is the same way I believe. If you have little or no experience with a lathe, practice with some junk wood before experimenting with expensive blocks from a specialty store. There are also lots of "old timers" in ruraly areas that have hoards of wood they have been saving for some project they never got around to. Finding these guys with an ad in a paper would be a great way to find sometimes wonderful finds for relatively inexpensive prices. Good luck, and happy turning!

What kind of wood are you looking for?

There are hundreds of sources of wood, though I personally would find "buying" wood to turn in a lathe very expensive. "Chunks" of wood, as such, are getting rare at lumber stores. What you would do is keep your eyes open for "found wood", someone cutting down a tree, or someone's hardwood firewood pile, red oak pallets out of Kansas. You might also consider "building wood" (planing and gluing pieces to build "chunks"). A sawmill's scrap pile. The list can go on, and on.
