It seems like one of our family recipes has vanished from our family and I want to try to reconstruct it.

Our recipe had apple sauce, dates, nuts and the candied type mixed fruit (not dried in the sense like raisins but more like sticky some what wet-like that came in a jar or package).

Do you have any recipes that answer this description? I'd like it. Thanks!

Red Velvet Cake I prefer this red velvet cake recipe above all I've tried because I always have self-rising flour on hand. Oil makes the layers moist, and butter and cream cheese with powdered sugar and chopped pecans are the makings of a mighty fine frosting. 2½ cups self-rising flour 1 cup buttermilk 1½ cups vegetable oil 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon vanilla ¼ cup red food color 1½ cups sugar 1 teaspoon cocoa 1 teaspoon vinegar 2 large eggs Preheat oven to 350°. Combine all ingredients in a large mixing bowl and beat with mixer until well blended. Pour batter equally into three well- greased or sprayed cake pans. Bake 20 minutes. Cool in pans 10 minutes. Remove from pans and cool completely. Frosting 1/3 pound butter softened 1 8-ounce and 1 3-ounce package cream cheese softened 1 pound box powdered sugar 2 cups chopped pecans 1 teaspoon vanilla Combine butter, cream cheese, powdered sugar and vanilla in a bowl. Beat until fluffy. Add chopped pecans. Frost between layers, top and side of cake. Great looking cake, that tastes even better, for Christmas or Valentine's Day.

My grandmother passed this one to me. Enjoy.
1 1/2 cups applesauce
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup shortening
2 1/2 cups flour
2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. allspice
2 cups walnuts, chopped
2 cups raisins
1 1/2 cups dates, chopped
1/2 cup maraschino cherries or red candied cherrie, chopped

Preheat oven to 275 degrees F. Grease two (8x4-inch) loaf pans or one tube pan.

In saucepan, blend applesauce, shortening, and sugar. Bring to a boil and boil 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Set aside to cool.

In large bowl, sift flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and allspice. Stir nuts, raisins, dates, and maraschino cherries into flour mixture.

Add cooled applesauce mixture to flour mixture; mix well. Pour into prepared pan(s).

Bake in 275 degree F (slow) oven for 1 hour and 40 minutes for loaf cakes and 2 hours for tube cake or until cakes test done. Cool 20 minutes in pan. Remove from pan and place on rack to cool completely before slicing. Wrap and store tightly covered.
