Here is my personal opinion:

I think God has an overall master plan for Earth. There are some big events that God wants done, and He may indeed intervene from time to time as needed to see that the right things happen at the right times.

He also intervenes from time to time in order to help and assist His children, answer prayers, and things like that.

I do not think that He plans out every instance in our lives, although He does gift us with skills and talents that He expects us to use. He gives us free will to exist in this world. That free will allows us to do either good or evil in our lives, as we choose.

I also believe that God gives us countless opportunities. Again, we can accept or decline as our free will is exercised.

Now as for the purposes for everything, I also have an opinion. Other people can choose to do stupid stuff. Some of that stupid stuff can hurt us. I think that God does not plan to hurt us, but should some hurt happen, God does not waste it. Much of our hurt and pain can be used by God to teach us, strengthen our faith, or give us valuable experience that we can use to empathize with others.

Sometimes, especially if God needs us to do something specific, He may step in to prevent a hurt by the way.

Most times, though, if we stay faithful through the hurts, God sends us opportunities to use what happened to us for some other greater good.

Real life example. Take that Doctor Jarvik, the guy who invented the first artificial heart. He wanted to be an architect, and was studying for that end. Then, his father had a bad heart attack. This event was traumatic to the young architect, and eventually he began to study the human heart, and how it worked. Eventually this young man became a doctor, and created his wonderful invention.

I think God used this hurt that the young man suffered to inspire him beyond where he first wanted to be.

Similar things happen when a woman is raped, when people are killed or robbed, or even when natural disasters come into people's lives. Ever notice how may of the victims become activists to prevent bad things from happening, or advocates for other victims?

If the person stays with God, the hurts and disappointments we suffered can prove useful as we gain insight to help others who have suffered similarly.

Not everyone who suffers stays with God, and not everyone reaps the benefits God offers. Some choose to dwell on the bad, others try to take revenge. Neither is something that God says is a good thing to do, but again, we have free will to do as we please.

The purpose of the '06 tsunami that wiped out over 200,000 lives was his disapproval of Muslims and a few of several other religions, including Christians, right? The super volcano lying under Wyoming, which is presumably 40,000 years overdue and will wipe out millions of lives, retribution for the entire Wicked World? Fifty million dead re Hitler and Tojo? Takes a lot of office time for God , doesn't it, Sweetie? Whence the benevolence on the trail? What trail?

If God is Omnipotent, Omniscent, and Omnipresent - this means he spans time and space and is all powerful. How can such a being have 'purpose' ? surely Purpose would make God disappear in a puff of logic.

Yea, He has a purpose---ya just have to listen to Him to find out what it is. He wants us all to love Him and then to love each other. After that, there's different purposes for each of us. It's not to rape or kill, though. Someone out there got Him confused with satan.

If there is a god of some kind, it certainly does not appear to personal. That being the case, there is no purpose to anything that happens, from our perspective.

God has a plan, but we have the freedom to deviate from God's plan. Therefore we bring a lot on ourselves and those we love.
