Personally, I could never leave NYC. (I know, I was forced to live somewhere else for 3 years, and when I came back, that was it! I'll never leave again!)
The person who said nothing else is like NYC is correct. However, it really depends on WHAT it is about NYC you like? There are some cities that do an okay job at mimicking what's great about this city in some ways but not in others.
Unfortunately, most of the cities that have been recommended - Boston, San Francisco, etc, are ALSO very expensive to live in. The real estate in Boston is almost as expensive as NYC and San Francisco may actually be worse!
The one place mentioned that might be okay is Chicago. No, it's NOT NYC, but it seems to be a nice, liveable place, with it's own cultural advantages. And it is less expensive than NYC is.
Good luck (and think about what those people said who suggested moving into an outer borough. That's what I did when I was in college, and the neighborhood changed to become a VERY desireable place to live in indeed.)

If you're looking for a slower paced area, try Columbia, South Carolina. The cost of living is very good, but you will need a decent paying job or go down there with some money.
You can pay $500.00 for house payment. You will need a vehicle (transportation sucks). People are friendly until you get Gamecock colors wrong (SC Gamecocks' colors are Black and GARNET, not burgundy). Real cool things to see, but not like NYC. Charleston, SC is really nice. The downtown area will remind you of Greenwhich Village!

There is no city like NYC. However, if I had to name a similar city, that city would be Chicago.

Boston. Of course, Boston is a lot smaller, less crowded, and less of everything than NYC. Regardless, Boston has a lot to offer in terms of art&culture, smart people, and historic feel to a city.
