Well, just had a meeting for track and practice starts January 28th for the indoor season, thats 1 week before our first meet and I want to be somewhat more prepared.

Our head coach says we are weightlifting 3 times a week (monday wensday saturday)

And I plan on going to weightlifting over winterbreak

My question is. Will weightlifting make me faster? and if so.

What do i do?

(I do SHORT DISTANCE)

I Think i answered this already but here is basically what i said:

Weight lifting is very important to helping your speed because It can help you build fast twitch muscles.
size isnt what you need to focus on though so dont think you need to get all cut and bulky.

These lifts will help you the most:

Power clean-
The power clean will help build explosive fast twitch muscles in your hips when you drive the weight up as well as shoulder and arm power.

Clean and jerk- Will help you in the same way as the power clean but it involves the legs more and more of a drive upward which you need if you want to be explosive out of the blocks.

Squat- These will build your glutes and quads as well as your hamstrings. You will be stronger and more powerful if you do alot of squats and lunges as long as you dont stop running

Weighted calf raises- these build up calf strength, duh, and will help you have a stable base when you sprint or run fast.

hanging shrugs-If done properly, thses can also build explosive strength if you use your hips and drive upwards.

Leg press- leg power and strength assist in moving weight greater than your own. Will strengthen your hips and quads.

Those are the specific lifts. You should also do alot of dips, lunges reverse curls and regular curls.
The truth is, any lifts are fine, as long as you dont try to get too big. You dont need to be huge to be fast. you just need to get the maximum output from your muscles.

Upper body strength is the key, not weightlifting per se. And generally, the shorter the distance the more upper body strength plays a part.

Building upper body strength is beneficial to running distances of a mile or less, so that's why the coach has you on 3 days a week.

Yes, it will make you faster in the shorter distances. Work on upper body, abs, back & obliques, quads.

Good Luck

It takes muscles to run. All runners need to lift and do plyometric exercises.
When you lift you should do a total body program along with abdominal and core muscle work.

Lifting will make you faster, it is more beneficial to sprinters than distance runners.
