catholic priests are to devote themselves to the lord and cannot marry or have girlfriends.
here is the biblical support http://www.scripturecatholic.com/the_priesthood.html#priesthood-IV
some priests may not be virgins when they become priests but they have to take a vow of celibacy to enter the priesthood, such cases of not being a virgin may include being a protestant minister covert, realizing gods call to the priesthood after a conversion of heart etc....... i am a roman catholic from the north of ireland. i have seen the show, never liked it but if you enjoy it more power to ya. god bless and hope this has helped.

Priests cannot have girlfriends, but they can be friends with females.
Many priests are virgins when they enter the preisthood, but not all. It's possible for a man to become a Catholic at a later age -- in his 30s, say -- after having lived a thoroughly secular lifestyle, and then later be called to the priesthood and become a priest in, say, his 40s, long after the virginity ship sailed. As long as he willingly takes a vow of celibacy, the question of his virginity is a non-issue.

Hi, I'm Catholic. Catholics believe that Jesus is the only way to heaven. He does all the work, and we cannot earn our way into heaven. I'm sure that's what you believe as a Baptist, too. Jesus is our only Savior. We don't go through one formal "I accept Jesus as my personal Savior" thing the way you might have as a Baptist, because we believe we're supposed to accept Him as our personal Savior constantly, without end. That is the theme of the Liturgy of the Eucharist, which is the second half of every one of our worship services (Mass, which we have daily, not just on Sunday or Sunday and Wednesday). Yes, we do ask Jesus for forgiveness. In fact, we have a sacrament just for asking Jesus for forgiveness, called the Sacrament of Reconciliation -- that's how important it is to us. People who say Catholics don't go to heaven or that Catholics "preach a false gospel of works" are just trying to plant a hornets nest where there isn't one and then stir it up. There is a good book called "What Catholics REALLY Believe." If you read that, you'll get a good primer on what Catholicism is all about.

They don't need to be virgins, but they cannot have girlfriends (or sex) once they have been ordained to the priesthood.
The female character in your show doesn't really believe in the priesthood, or in the church, so it's up to the priest to remain celibate, and faithful to the church.
There's your plot element!

Priests are not allowed to have any girlfriends, but some of them break the rules and have boyfriends instead.
Thats why there are so many pedophiles in the catholic church. Because they are required to suppress what should be a normal human urge or drive. Its part of what makes us human. And they are denying that part of their humanity.
The Catholic Church hates the act of sex. To them its ugly, and its ONLY good for having children. It is not allowed to be done for pleasure - that is a sin - although where exactly it says that in the bible, I have no idea.

No they arent. When they take their vows to become a priest they also take a vow of chastity. They are also supposed to be virgins when they become priests. And there isnt anything wrong with asking.

If it is possible to have a pure platonic relationship. it would be alright. However, standard girl friend/boy friend is best to avoid since they have taken a vow of chastity and never to marry. It is part of the disipline of their lives to devote nearly full time to all others in the parish sacrificing their own personal inclinations in order to help others.

No, and that is obviously why there is the problem with molestation among their ranks. What kind of a man would be attracted to this unnatural lifestyle.
