this is very complicated, so here it goes:
when you bow to someone or anything you are showing your ultimate life and are willing to serve that object/person no matter the cause
so you bow to the queen of England because she is the figure head of England, if Ur English you bow summit to England (patriotic reasons)
so there is not a specific reason or cause to anyone you bow to
you bow to who/whom you think deserves your loyalty
hoped i helped

Mostly you would only bow to a person in a royal family, Queen or Prince, such as that. Anyone else and it would really not be appropriate.

Bowing to a royal family memeber is a show of respect .

well in japan the bow depends on first meeting, buisness and realtionship. it also counts spirutally (sorry bad spelling)
if you live in western culutre, its pretty much omitted but its still found. like when you talk to your boss or meet your school principal. but only in asian societies does it really exist before your eyes. seeing people bow when talking to someone on a phone is weird too!

I think the meaning of bowing as detailed in your question implies paying respect.
I tend to respect more on my physical body than my soul, but knowledge in (religious) education, tells respecting and nurturing the soul is to be primary.

Bow to whom stands behind the stranger in the mirror, the one in nirvana who has not need for self consciousness; they are past need for your gratitude.
