absolutely not. a slug will not carry nearly as far a rifle bullet. but if you hunt where ranges are between 25-100 meters, you shouldn't have a problem. the key here is to go to a range and practice, practice, practice. your shoulder will hate you but you'll have a better feel and knowledge that you can use when in the field. i've used both and the 30-30 is more precise and i can hit exactly where i'm aiming. the slug is more powerful due to the energy it puts out. the deer i've hit with a slug don't go very far whereas with a 30-30 i've tracked them for over a 100 yards or more. the key here is that you stated that you use a smoothbore barrel on the 1100. they are not as accurate as a rifled barrel even with rifle sights. i would try and get a rifled barrel with 20-22" in length. i would start out at 25 meters on the target range and work my way out but i wouldn't go beyond 100 meters. even with a rifled barrel the slug just won't be as accurate as the 30-30.

Where do you hunt? If you need to shoot 200+ yards, leave the 1100 home, but if you hunt thick brush or softwoods where you're generally shooting inside 100 yards, there's nothing better than that gift you received from your Dad. Check the remington website or your local gun shop - you may be able to get a rifled barrel for that thing. Rifled barrel and sabot ammo will increase your range significantly. Happy Hunting.

At what selection? At long ranges, the 30-06 is a excessive-high quality cartridge. yet at short ranges, i could take a 30-30 over a 30-06. fairly if looking the common forests wherein photos are hardly over one hundred yards. however no longer as powerful as a 30-06, i come across the 30-30 rifles to be 'handier', for loss of a extra effective notice. good stability; rapid to elevate to my shoulder; reasonable flinch; rapid to shoot properly. And the slug which you recover from a whitetail shot with a 30-30 is in simple terms alluring; a appropriate mushroom. i've got not had a deer yet ***** that I ought to have used a much bigger gun. yet in spite of this, by employing the time I walk as much as them they actually do no longer say a selection of of something.

No, not really. The Rem. 1100 is a fine old shotgun. I have one set up for slugs. With some of the newer slug ammo, and a decent shotgun scope, I would feel O.K. in taking a 150 yard shot, but no further. With the 30-30 I could reach out farther and be confident in killing my animal.

you can get a rifled slug barrel for the 1100 and if you use Sabot slugs you can knock a deer flat out to 150 yds. Thats about all the distance I shoot withthe 30-30 I have. I don't kjnow here you hunt, but around here most shots taken are less than 100yds.

You will not get the same amount of range from your 1100. About 70 yards is about as effective as your 1100 will be.

No - most shotgun slugs give useable accuracy only out to 100 yards or so, some less. Try several brands to see what shoots best, and sight-in at 50 yards, not 100 as you would with a rifle. After finding the best load at 50 yards, move to 100 and see if it stays on the paper. If it does, great, if not, move back to 75 yards, you may find your practical range thereabouts.

No!
At least not without a rifled barrel. Some of the newer saboted slugs claim minute of angle groups at 100 yards with a scoped shotgun, but I'd not try it.
If you are not in a shotgun only state, keep using the .30-30 for large game and let the shotgun stick to birds and other small game.
