One of every five people have herpes....its a lot more common than you realize. Since the Army is a younger, higher risk population than the civilian community (we are as a group, risk takers!), you will not be the only person with herpes that the doctors have seen. Trust me. My ex-husband had it...still does, he's just not my husband anymore for unrelated reasons. I've had two friends with it. Its not that big an issue.
Lying about it is.

Look, I have no Idea why you would want to try to join without going through MEPS, makes no sense. There is a long wait apparently, but if you want to join the military it's "hurry up and wait" all the time anyways, so if that's the case you better gain some serious patience before joining.

Nothing will stop you from seeing an outside doctor once you're out of training. You'll also pay for it out of your own pocket. If you hide your condition and it is subsequently discovered, you will be discharged for a fraudulent enlistment. If you wind up deployed to Iraq, I doubt there will be a local doctor available to treat you.

Yes you can see a doctor, but only after you complete basic training and AIT. When you get to your first duty station, then you can go to the aid station and talk to doc about your herpes.

I dont' think you'll get through MEPS undetected. The virus shows up on the blood screen. The med personnel will discuss treatment with you, it is common.

when your in the military you see military doctors, I know working for specialists that when your active duty your required to get a referral or authorisation in order to see doctors outside the base. The military will take care of your problem, treat or whatever but you need their permission to see someone non military... as my son tells me"they own me Mom,You gave birth to me but they own me"

if you don't tell them you'll be a fraudulent enlistment, and be subject to the punishment for that action.
