I always do that. If the guy isn't the owner of the liquor store, he's going to have to count out that register at the end of his shift, and he'll have to make up that $5 out of his pocket. I believe that $5 will buy more than $5 worth of bad karma. But more realistically, if I expect people to treat me fairly and not try to cheat me, I have to not try to cheat them.

Having been in a change person in several casinos, and I always had to pay any shortages back out of my own pocket, I am very conscious of change, and accuracy.
I always give back the extra.
Once, years ago, an incident occurred where a cashier did not know if the money on the counter was mine, or from a guy who'd left earlier. I said it was the other guy's, because here is mine. And I paid her.
The woman asked why I hadn't said it was mine, even if it wasn't. My 3 year old son told her, hotly, "Because MY Mommy does not steal!"
Mmm hmm. And he was an honest person when he grew up, too.

Well, I think you did the right thing and that you have integrity! Obviously this guy is rather absent minded. I don't know if he is the owner or not, but I agree with the person who said he has to count his drawer at the end of the night. Sounds like he may always have the wrong amount of money, but at least it's not because of you. Always do the right thing! Why? Because you want to treat him like you would want to be treated.

Yes you do. I have done both.. kept extra change accidentally and intentionally when i watched the cashier give ti back to me wrong. ( this was when i was 10 younger and had a hip on my shoulder) I have learned that when i notice something amiss I right away try to make it right. I take notice of anyone dropping money when they are in front of me and have even found a $100 bill between me and the gas pumps as I was walking out which i gave back to the guy who was frantically looking all around his car and searching for something missing... I figured it was his and I returned it. you can say finders keepers loosers weepers but think about if it was you who lost it, wouldn't you want it back? I think about that and it helps to make things right. I have found things of value over the years that could never be returned to the rightful owner and have held onto them but if you knowingly see or notice something as too much being given back then you need to say somehitng and as for that guy who said that.. he was wrong.

The cashier winds up having to answer to their boss about the money that's missing from their drawer. I'd give it back because I know the cashier will get into trouble or have to pay for that mistake. Plus, I'm an honest person and I don't steal. Plain and simple.

If I notice that I've been given the wrong change at the time they hand it over, I definitely hand it right back and correct them. I don't care if its $1.00 or $100.00.
If I was given the incorrect change and didn't realize it until I was well away from the location (30 minutes or more travel to location), I would only go give it back if the amount was over $20.00. I know this sounds odd, but I wouldn't waste my energy to go back and correct someone's error. If it were above 20, I'd take it back because I've worked in retail and I know that you are held accountable for your cash. Any money missing over $20 bucks, and they can fire you. I'd hate for a cashier to be accused of theft or something and it turned out they just handed me the wrong amount of change.
If it was under $20, there'd be less of a chance of that happening. My not going back would be mostly out of pure laziness. I know... sad... but honest.

I actually don't notice until I get home and I'm reading the receipts. So I'd would end keeping the money unwittingly. But if I do notice I would tell them....if they were nice.

Pick one:
-Do you want to be nice and honest(Return the money)
OR
-Mean, greedy, and sneaky?(Keep the money)
YOUR CHOICE!
Think about how you would feel if you were that person and the customer didn't return it. Now think about it if the customer DID return it. Also think about if you dropped four dollars on the ground and someone found it. Wouldn't you be happier if they RETURNED IT?
