We adopted "Simba" about 2 yrs. ago (he's about 3 1/2 yrs. old now) from the Golden Retriever Rescue. He had been starved and had lost an ear from unknown causes prior to his adoption. He is several inches taller (Setter-like) than any golden retriever I've previously owned, and weighs close to 90 lbs., though. Do you think that Simba is a purebred golden retriever, or an Irish Setter? Note the slightly domed head that might be evidence of Setter-blood.

Looks pretty Golden to me.. but there is no real way of telling and it doesn't matter anyway. The 'domed' head means nothing - that is not evidence of Setter any more than it is evidence of any other breed - it is simply a characteristic of this dog -- I have Dobermans with slightly domed skulls and others with flat ones -- it is a fault to have the domed ones but it doesn't mean they have Setter in them (as I know they don't) -- If you feel better thinking he is 'purebred' then think it == if you feel better thinking he is a mix, then think that -- it really doesn't make any difference and there is absolutely no way of knowing and no real reason to worry about it... he looks loved and content and that is what is important...

I used to have a couple Setters, and now I have a golden, and Simba looks JUST like my golden now.

My golden is very red, stands about 2'6" at the shoulder, and he's always been quite heavy. He's (supposedly) pure bred golden.

Looks like a purebred Golden to me. I see no signs of Irish setter anywhere.

He's looks a lot like my first golden, Vegas. And the domed head, one of my goldens, Casino, has that and she is a pure bread golden. The coloring is that of a golden as well.

No matter what he is, he is a beautiful dog!!

He looks like a golden to me. Beautiful as well. I have a golden and he is quite red and people ask me all the time if that's an Irish setter.....weird ;-)
Thanks for rescuing.
