Personally, I'm not pissed off at either islam or Christianity, but as a self-defining "liberal," I suppose I'm qualified to answer. The article does not state that "Islam condones marrying off girls under the age of 10." Islam does no such thing. One Saudi cleric has expressed his opinion - and Saudi clerics are not known for being moderates. There is no single Muslim position on almost any legal matter, but it should be pretty clear that this case represents the most extreme aspects of the Saudi legal system. For what it's worth, I deplore almost everything that happens in Saudi Arabia, all the time.

Contemporary North American adaptations of Buddhism--Zen and Vipassana are the ones I know best--are doing a pretty good job, including having women in positions of leadership.
There have been some sex scandals, usually of men teachers with female students, but, again, by and large, there is both a conscious intent and an organizational structure for affirming spiritual gender equality.

Of course modern religions are biased against women, but in particular, monotheistic religions are totally biased against women, for the simple fact that there is NO monotheistic religion (at least none that I have come up with) in which the deity worshiped is female. In the monotheistic Big Three Judaism, Islam, and Christianity, the one and only is Male Male Male.
Naturally, these religions are TOTALLY biased against women. As to other modern religions, my limited knowledge of Hinduism and Buddhism make me hesitate to comment much, but Buddha was male, and I understand that most of the real power in Hinduism is with men. Wicca and other polytheistic religions have made progress toward gender equality.
I'm a pantheist, which is about as all-inclusive and non gender based as it gets, although it has been said that we are just atheists with a nicer name!
Thanks for the great reminder about the biases of modern religions. I asked something along this line some time ago, which was whether there has ever been a monotheistic religion that had A FEMALE deity as the one and only. No one could come up with one. To me, this says a mouth full.
Blessings,

The Quakers, properly called the Religious Society of Friends, is not biased against women. But Friends meetings are few and far between, these days.

Most Asian religions, Unitarians, Atheists, Agnostics, and Pagans. Wiccans too (Wicca is a Pagan religion.) In fact, in some Wiccan traditions such as Dianic Wicca, they are biased FOR women.

Alot of people think christianity is not against women, but i think it's about the same as islam? Except that islam is more strict about it. Example. Christian women are supposed to wear headscarfs when going to church.(for the exact same reason as the muslims). Except that muslim women are supposed to wear it all the time. bleh. I think atheism. But it's not a religion.

All of the major religions are patriarchal and are composed of a gender hierarchy. Men rule, women serve.
Even in Buddhism, where men are priests and women are Vendata Nuns.
The only system where this would not redound to dogma would be Evangelical Atheism.

few non-abrahamic religions that i'm aware of have scriptural constraints on women. the sikhs are a good example of monotheists who do not devalue women. the tao te ching says that you must embrace the feminine.
