Set the frying pan to medium low heat. (less than half power). Butter the outside of the bread slices evenly but lightly, make sure you cover the whole slice. Place in the pre-heated pan and brown the first side to the desired darkness, then flip and brown the other side. Don't be afraid to lift the edge to check if it's ready. Don't slice the cheese too thickly, it won't melt all the way through before the bread is over cooked.

One thing I watch for to flip it is if the butter on the top slice of bread starts to melt a lot, then it's time to flip to the second side. The second side browns a bit quicker, so watch it a bit sooner.

Good luck.

According to me, the best way to make a grilled cheese is this:
1.Get a medium sized skillet and put a tablespoon of regular butter on it, Heat up the skillet to medium high heat (7 on a scale of 1-10) Melt the butter untill it sizzles.
2. While the butter is melting, take two slices of bread, LIGHTLY butter them too. Set the two slices of bread side by side in the pan. DO not turn down the heat. watch them closly untill one side browns, flip em.
3. Add your cheese and turn heat to medium low. CHeese will melt because of the breads heat usually. Eat warm :D
Enjoy ^_^

Get your ingredients...
butter
bread (frozen works best)
a slice of cheese.
Turn the stove on a medium setting.
butter the 2 slices of bread...make sure the butter is on the outside and the cheese is in the middle.
then grill each side until it is golden brown.
dont forget to turn the stove off.
and let the grilled cheese cool a little.
enjoy!

I put a small amount of butter on each piece of bread ( on both sides). I put both pieces of bread in the skillet, which is on a medium temp and let it sit for about 30 seconds... then flip it. When it gets toasted, I put a slice of cheese on one piece of bread and put the other on top and give it enough time to let the cheese melt.

first you turn on the stove or whatever. then you get bread, cheese, butter and a knife. butter both the pieces of bread, then lay the first piece of bread on the pan, out cheese on the bread, and then lay the other piece on the cheese with the butter on the outside. push the bread togther with the spatula then flip it. wait till both sides are brown or however you like them then eat. hope this helps.

Butter the outside of the bread - Lightly - as in if you can scrape butter off with the knife after you buttered it, you got too much....
Heat your skillet over medium heat
you know its hot when a drop of water will dance on it a few seconds before evaporating....
put your bread on it
lay your cheese on that
put your other bread on top of that....

How long to leave it?
Hard to say....
I have to peek with a spatula
