The engine stock engine sizes available for that year were the engine you currently have (2.3L I4), 3.0L V6, and the 4.0L V6. I've driven different trucks with all 3 engine choices, and I must say even the 2.3L had enough power driving around empty but put a load on it or in it and forget about any power. The 3.0L V6 that was in my company work truck had 293,781 miles on it when I quit and it was still running great and not leaking any oil or using oil. My grandfather's 93 ranger 4x4 has the 4.0L V6 engine. Its got quite a bit of power and is a lot of fun to drive. Problem is its not exactly economical as you might think. It gets about 18-20MPG. and if the 4x4 is used cut those numbers down to about 12-15MPG. The 4.0L engine leaks oil everywhere (typical Ford).

You can easily drop the tiny 302 under the hood, however you have to find that site that sells the mounting kits for this application. But if you actually want MAJOR power from a bone stock engine and not from any wimpy tiny 302, I have seen many Rangers with the 5.7 LS-1 chevrolet engine and trans. I just wish I could find my friend's phone number as so I could post that website address for you for the conversion kits.

Alot of people put carbed 302's in there rangers. Or you can be different but not so much and turbo your 2.3L. There are alot of turboed 2.3L also. Do a search on turbo 2.3L ranger forums or something like that.

But like it was stated you can put anything in there. It all depends on how much money and time you have.

The most common swap is a 302. Rangerstation's website has a lot of info on a V-8 swap. A 351W, being a little taller than the 302, may require a body lift to clear the hood. Check out the link below to get you started:

If I was going to put another engine in a Ranger, it would be a 4 cylinder cummins. You can youtube it and see one guy (possibly more) that have done it. They are used in delivery trucks and sometimes you can find them bolted up to an allison transmission.

anything is possible, people put v8's in those little trucks. If you have the time , the tools, the $$$ and the 'know-how' you can put any size engine in there. Of course with more horsepower, you would need to strengthen the frame and the rest of the drivetrain(axles, driveshaft, rear differential, etc)
as the saying goes "speed is money, how fast do you want to go?"

You can put the biggest v8 in if you modify things enough. As far as 4 cyl. I think the 2.3 is the biggest. Alot of racers prefer the smaller c.i. 2.0 I think it is. You can put a v6 in also or buy a Chevy.
