The best I have found so far is Black Hills ammo. Mine likes the 168 gr. but doesn't like the 175 gr. You might also like to try Ultramax 168 gr speer bthp from www.sportmansguide.com I have been getting the Black Hills from www.midway.com I would try both and see which your rifle likes better. buy the way, both are very accurate in bolt guns too. Good luck and take a friend hunting, we need as many pro-gun friends as we can get. Merry Christmas...

Any FMJ ammo that is NOT recommended for hunting is the only factory ammo you should be shooting. Here's why: The pressure curve for hunting powder that achieves optimum velocity (read highest possible velocity that meets SAMMI specs) has too much of a high spike in the pressure curve, which ultimately will cause a bending of your M1A operating rod. One second you will be shooting 1 MOA groups and the next shots will be into a 1 FOOT pattern or worse with the bent rod-Under no circumstances use Winchester, Federal or Remington or any other hunting ammo, as operating rods and gunsmithing are both larger bills than you most likely would like to pay for. I believe that the recommendation to shoot Black Hills may be the best, however contact Black Hills to determine pressure curves and state that you are shooting an M1A. This same problem can occurr in any "Gas Gun" including M1 Garands.

I use the below listed ammunition in my own M-1A and it makes for a very accurate target round at a fair price. With the war in Iraq causing such shortages lately , it's difficult to find quality .308 Win ammunition that won't break the bank.
The ammunition below is available from several online distributors, but Cabela's has the best price I've seen on it lately.

Cabelas.com

MAG-TECH .308 Winchester150 Grain FMJ-BT (Boat-Tail Bullet) 2820 Feet per second 2,661 Ft Lbs at 100 yards
Current price at Cabela's is about $28.00 per (50) rounds. Quality brass cases and they are reloadable...

*Note.Black Hills brand doesn't shoot well out of either one of my M-1A's...You will have to try several and see what shoots best for you......

I have two M1A rifles; needless to say I also found that ammo sort of melts in their presence. I found some Indian (from India) ball ammo at J&G last summer that was $ 60.00 a thousand if you bought 5,000 rounds. It is non-corrosive and functions just fine; don't know if they have any left, but it would be worth checking with them.
