You will never go wrong with a model 1911 or variant in .45 ACP. A .45 has all of the qualities you request.
One that I am really intrigued by but have not shot is the new Judge from Taurus. It can handle .45 long colt or .410 guage shotshells. It is great for self defence. It might have more recoil than the .45 auto, but it is a very versatile defense gun.
If you want even less recoil, get a .38 special revolver. Many companies make them and they can be inexpensive. They are tried and true, very reliable, and are easy to shoot. Get one with a rubber grip to make handling easier.
The best and most time-tested self defense gun is a .45 auto in a 1911 variant. Good luck, and be safe.

Model 10 Smith & Wesson, aka Military & Police Model in .38 S&W SPL. This revolver was the standard American police sidearm for over 80 years. Smith & Wesson has made over 6 Million of them so it is easy to find a good one on the used gun market.
It is a medium frame revolver and can be found with barrels ranging from 2" to 6", I'd recommend a 4" or shorter barrel.
The .38 S&W SPL does not produce heavy recoil, nor is the muzzle blast overly intimidating from a 4" barrel. Even so, it is a pretty good fight stopper if loaded with the right ammunition, and if the bullet is put in the right spot.

I Love my Glock model 22. Its a .40 cal round. I Also Love the 1911 but I have been in situations requiring me to fire both of those guns at a close range indoors...The 1911 made my ears bleed and lose hearing for several days. It is very loud. Basically a large caliber slow moving round is what you want for indoor protection. You don't want too much penetration on your target. The stray round could go into another room and do some major collateral damage. I recommend any pistol that shoots a round bigger than a .38. Then choose a round that will not shoot through your target.

My choice in the Glock. They are very dependable, not the most expensive, and extremely accurate. They make models in different calibers: 45 acp, 45 gap, 40 s&w, and 9mm. There are 3 different sizes. You need to have your uncle to a gun shop so he can try all 3 frame sizes to see which fits his hand the best. I have been carrying either the 45 acp or the 40 s&w everyday for the last 15 years or so. I haven't had any problems in the 40,000+ rounds I shot except for worn out magazines. Good luck and take a friend shooting, we need all the pro-gun friends out there we can get. Merry Christmas...

I own 4 handguns. three .45s and a .44 mag. I have a kimber warrior 1911, a wonderful gun. but for size, recoil and looks I love my hk usp .45 compact. it has less recoil than my 1911 and it is smaller. the .45 was the only round actually created for stopping a man. always keep that in mind. a 9mm is a hole punch, and a .40 is only a slightly larger hole punch. My RTO is a green beret. he always says the .45 is the greatest round ever made. he also carries a usp .45 compact.

If you are unfamiliar with hand guns, make your first one a revolver, preferably a .38 or .357 Mag which will also handle .38 for less recoil.
If you are trained enough to be comfortable with an auto-loader, the 1911A1 .45 ACP is far and away the easiest and best first gun. 100 years of successful field testing.

Hmmm, there are 21981891 different guns that fit that description. They are all deadly. You need to make more decisions. What size hands do you have? Hand strength? Does it have to be hidden? Can you work an automatic - and clear it if it jams? Stainless or blue steel? Heavy or light? Visit a gun store and touch as many as you can. Go target practice with friends. Buy one. Then take it home and practice, practice, practice. Finally, have it with you when you need it.

I also like the sprigfield xd in 9 mm great defencive round, plenty of hallowpoint options for any situation. I prefer the 5" tactical myself. All xd's have a loaded chamber indicator that you can feel wich is nice when your hiding in a closet and want to verify you have a round in the chamber but don't want to have to make any noise doing a chamber check. They shoot well, and can be baught with night sights from the factory.

I prefer the full sized Glock model 22 in .40 S&W as the first choice, and then the Colt .45 auto.

Your two (2)* best choices for your needs are the 45acp or 357 Magnum.* They are proven man stoppers.* You can also shoot 38 caliber ammo in a 357 magnum, so you get two (2)* handguns for the price of one.* Pistol or Revolver* >Your choice.* I prefer the Colt or Smith & Wesson Brands.*
