I have found trial/demo versions that will convert the first 5 minutes of a video. My 9 year old bought a video on Itunes but he doesn't have an IPod, he has a Nextar MP3 player that plays videos.

yeah seach "Imtoo mp4 to avi converter" and for the free version it will only download the first 5 minutes

You can go to http://convertersoft.info to download a converter tool.
I personally use ultimate DVD + Video converter suite.
It works very well
